D&D 5E (2014) 2024 D&D is 2014 D&D with 4E sprinkled on top

First 3 or 4 civs were evolutions from each other. CivV inwards are basically reimaginings.

Civ4 generally considered the best 1. I like 3 and SMAC myself.

The change from Civ4's squares and stacking armies to Civ5's hexes and one unit per tile are pretty akin to the change from TSR AD&D to WotC "d20" D&D, I would agree.

ha. ha, Ive been sprinkling 4e into our 5e game for almost a decade (skill challenges, bloodied condition) so nothing new. Hell, Im still using many 3e books

I've been digging through lots of older material lately. Currently running a 3.0 adventure in 5E. Converting some 3.5 feats.

Mechanically the edition isn't great. Conceptually and fluff wise it may be one of the best.

Ideally, to me, the 4e character builder would be open source and freely downloadable. (And yes, I know, I have it.)

OSE and OSR in general are basically fan driven. And they're innovating from ye olde TSR editions.

I know my own strengths as a creator, and I can recognize that graphic design and layout are not among them. Not everyone is cut out to be a publisher.

I don't think that we need to imply that 4e fans are lazy.

I think the fanbase, the psychology in play, is very different.

I am looking at that space myself. I will say that the system @mearls is working on looks like it will fit in this space as well.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm aiming for! I ran Shadowdark and OSE for my regular groups. While they love those games, they missed having robust characters with different combat options and special tricks they could use.

The OS movement aims for simpler games where balance isn't a design goal. 4e is probably the hardest edition to design good content for due to all the interlocking mechanical elements. WotC didn't know how to design for 4e until a year into it's life!
