New changes are afoot for OSRIC!

Do you have a link to this thread? I was assuming (naively?) that it was going to be as close as possible to AD&D 1e and I would like to know if this isn't actually the case.

What I had previously read, mentioned that the game would actually be closer to AD&D than previous versions, except for the use of specific terminology which might cause copyright infringement.

Yes, the tone appears quite aggressive. I don't know if there's a story behind it, but it does not seem conductive to a constructive dialog. And I say this as someone who considers playing AD&D/BX with ascending AC an abomination that makes baby bulettes cry...

Probably because those of us who actually introduce people to the game and such find the idea of trying to change the game to something more akin to 3e as sort of offensive and infuriating. If OSRIC is to be an AD&D, it should be that, not some hybrid fantasy heartbreaker.

The polls make it obvious that most wanted it to be a fantasy heartbreaker rather than a clone anymore, so the question of what changes were made I feel are absolutely needed to be able to decide whether to support it or not.

it probably will be more popular as a fantasy heartbreaker (but it wouldn't be a AD&D clone anymore and so claiming it is would be sort of not telling the truth, as well as leaving room for someone else to make a true AD&D clone to replace the vacant spot OSRIC used to hold), but turning it from AD&D to a D&D hybrid type game defeats the entire purpose of why I would use it or suggest it to someone else in the first place.

That's why I'm curious as to what changes actually occurred with their conversion. Did they use ascending AC, have it as an option, or what? Did they change movement to be more friendly to the VTT? Is it really closer to AD&D now, or isn't it?

I know many favor WotC D&D on this site and have no problems with making it closer to WoTC D&D than AD&D, but that doesn't mean that everyone who plays AD&D is in favor of that. The old schoolers may be the minority these days, but that does not make us irrelevant. We may be unpopular with the WotC D&D forms of players these days, but when they hijack our games, it sort of miffs off some of us.

Why should they respond? Obviously because some of the suggestions miffed off some of the older gamers who wanted a AD&D clone rather than the popular movement to make everything a 3e clone with aspects of TSR D&D. Is it going to be a true clone, or just a clone in name only. He may be a singular speaker of the thread, but I feel he was speaking for a whole bunch of players who don't speak up but read it.

I think that’s a misuse of the phrase “fantasy heartbreaker”, honestly. Also I wouldn’t want to cater to people offended by numbers going up versus down.

I talked to Matt at GaryCon. It’s going to be AD&D.

The 5e comment from others is a misunderstanding. Matt means to modernize format and layout and presentation. He mentions 5e only to illustrate some of the presentation and such.

The full PDF will be free, art and all. Right along side of OSRIC 2. In fact he intends to start releasing parts of it to the public for feedback and testing. I suggest anyone with interest in the results get involved.

With actual AD&D being easily accessible and OSRIC already serving as a perfect free clone, I'm much more interested in what Mat's perfect version would look like. If anyone could improve on the old rules, it would be him.
