How would YOU change Shadowdark?

I am legitimately shocked we haven't been inundated with Stranger Things, 80s Kids on Bikes Shadowdark 3PP products.
Especially considering how many Stranger Things style games are out there, with more being released on a regular basis, even during the long hiatus between seasons.

The people hacking Shadowdark seem to be more interested in science fiction, post-apocalyptic and wild west takes.

I went with in the grim darkness of late medieval Germany there is only war.

I don't get why this is so hard for people.

Is it a PC? It cannot see in the dark.

Is it an NPC aligned with the PCs? It cannot see in the dark.

Is it an NPC enemy or otherwise not aligned with the PCs? It can see in the dark.

If an NPC monster switches sides and aligns with the PCs it suddenly loses it's ability to see in the dark.

Just like in the old days.
There's an adjustment for some due to certain PCs having infravision since B/X (at least) :sneaky:

I am still searching for the perfect "dark fairy tale" setting. Isolated, small kingdoms set in deep and dangerous forest, etc.
Dolmenwood is OK for that (pretty friggin' great actually, IMO anyway). Warhammer's Old World could actuallybe a pretty good base, but it lacks the fairytale german thing. The tech level and feel would be very Van Helsing/Brother's Grimm which would be pretty rad.

I almost picked up Dolmenwood; it does seem pretty great. If there were a Shadowdark version I'd have all the hardcovers sent overnight.

The systems are close enough that I think using it for SD would require only minor faffing. Mind you I've read all the books already, so my idea of 'minor' might not be everyone's. DW also doesn't go in for as much underground play as SD is designed to, but I don't think that's a big deal. The Dolmenwood books certainly are gorgeous though.
