Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Kobold Press--known for its D&D 5E compatible products--is diversifying into the world of cosy TTRPGs with Riverbank, a game of 'elegant animals, chaos, & whimsy'. The game has a page on Backerkit already, and launches in April.

Illustrated by Kathleen Jennings, and designed by Kij Johnson, the game allows you to attend tea parties, compete at the village fair, and dance at fancy balls. It uses a new game system which utilises a balance between the Animal and Poetry sides of your character.

In a RiverBank game, you join an intelligent society of anthropomorphic Animals and enter their life of cake and teatime by the slow part of the river. Here, the charm of cottagecore meets the whimsy of sophisticated critters as they navigate the intricacies—and often the bedlam—of polite Animal society.

Riverbank is a game about roleplaying, where your character choices directly impact the narrative. Weave farcical or dramatic tales of elegant characters on curious quests as you celebrate friendships, navigate social niceties, and weather the unique dynamics of Animal life. Attend tea parties, stroll through gardens, dance at fancy balls, and win the prize at the village fair—all while trying to keep a stiff upper lip and dodging difficult relatives.

Backed it! At the pdf level; my poor aged eyes need to be able to magnify the text.

I'm not thrilled it's another game that uses cards because I can't afford to get them at the moment, and anyway, 99% of the time I play via discord where I can't really use them. I really hope the text of the cards is also printed in the pdf so I can actually play the game without the physical cards. (I miss the days when these things were on tables.)

I'm glad this is a friendly, cozy game, though--the bit about Miss Hiver running a laundry for "girls who have run afoul of the law" would have seriously disturbed me otherwise.

Yeah, I’m not sure about the card thing simply because I store my rpgs on bookshelves and when a game needs extra specialised bits and pieces like card decks and nonstandard dice it just becomes a storage headache.

I was going to have a read through the QuickStart at some point to try to work out if the cards are required for play, hopefully not.

Fair enough!

The text from the Betweentimes and Haphazardry card decks will also be printed in the book, so you don't strictly need to have the actual cards to play.

Having said that, the physical cards are so beautiful and add such a delightful element to play, they are very much worth getting :)
