I wonder how much of that old art they own the rights to, and how much they'd have to renegotiate?
Given the big fat D&D art history book, my guess is they own it all, because all of it was work for hire or done in house.

The only time they got in trouble for reprints was with the Dragon CD set because they did not have continuing rights to the fiction, or to specific licensed comics (KoDT specifically).

Man I am so glad I kept the data from the Dragon CD.

I'd probably pay double for it, because the art on the books really puts me in the right frame of mind, and I just can't do "mixing modern and medieval
I do find the idea that D&D was, at any time, authentically medieval quite ridiculous.

Our ideas about history change all the time, and all of them are wrong.

they own the rights, the artists could keep the originals from my understanding
The artists sell prints of their work, though, so I'm not sure that the rights situation as as clear cut as that. I've had my eye on decorating my room with a bunch of Larry Elmore prints for some time, and I'll probably pull the trigger soonish. They probably have some kind of deal with the artists about exactly what rights who has and exactly what they can do.

As for the actual question:
  • A full campaign that's Eberron specific, with Keith Baker on lead.
  • A full campaign that's Dark Sun specific.
  • Something not unlike 3e's Heroes of Horror that specifies how to modify the game to be more grimdark.
  • A brand new setting that takes advantage of that and is more grimdark than default D&D. Written by someone like Rob Schwalb, who they allow to do things his way, or someone else who knows how to do that kind of thing right, at least.
  • Heck; they can go all out and partner with Cubicle 7 to make a dark and grubby Warhammer FRP setting, but with D&D rules, and I'd be excited for it. That might actually convince me to play 5.5.
Maybe it's more fair to say that I wish someone would do those things, but I have serious doubts that WotC could pull any of it off. If they let Baker or someone else play with their IPs, though, we could get good products on Drive Thru or whatever, though.
