Yeah, it's disappointing and gross. I had read a few of his posts on AD&D play, which were pretty good, before spotting the fascist stuff.

And this is the problem with the OSR space, unfortunately. A few good posts about the game and then you find a bonanza of excrement. It's why I have a lot of trouble engaging with that community. Not enough people speaking out about it to make it seem like that's not accepted.

Yeah this is definitely one of my biggest problems with the OSR and deciding whether to get more involved in the games and products that come out of it. Not only do I need to do much more thorough work to investigate who I am supporting with my money... It's the philosophy of many of the bigger creators in the space.

It's not just the fact that the community has bad apples... it's also the fact that since many of the big names have decided to go with a no politics policy, which essentially means sticking their head in the sand and ignoring anything problematic... it just makes the bad apples philosophies and politics seem even more prevalent in OSR and gives the impression that this is what a large chuck of the community is ok with.

I can't blame you. I spend a ton of time in OSR circles which are explicitly inclusive and antifash (r/osr has blacklisted the worst folks, and you'll usually see comments about the lower-profile ones), but I've certainly had blood-angering disappointments from creators who used to be broadly well-regarded and own a few books now from people I wish I hadn't given money to.

I'm more choosy now.

Ben Milton aka Questing Beast is probably the worst for this mainly because he doesn’t realize when his opinions that he considers “non-political” become grist for the mill amongst the same problematic individuals.

For the next few years of my life, I expect to mostly read books written by people who are dead [1]. This is looking like a better and better idea all the time.

Fair. I just read Donella Meadows' Thinking in Systems, am in the middle of Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem, and just ordered Poul Anderson's There Will be Time. OTOH I'm also in the middle of Nachtway's Strictly Fantasy, so there's at least one on this side of the daisies.

Right now I'm reading Heinlein. All of Heinlein. At least I Will Fear No Evil was the first volume, to get that suction out of the way quick. But I'm currently on Sixth Column, a.k.a. Being Less Racist Than John W. Campbell is Such a Low Bar, Isn't It?

...yeah, I've been a fan of Heinlein since I read Starship Troopers when I was an eleven year old military brat, but I've spared myself the ones I already know will suck. 😅

And the Virginia Edition puts the juveniles fairly early. So I've finished dessert and now I have to eat a lot of broccoli.
