D&D (2024) Variant Human idea

I've been playing with the idea that a Human should be able to take two Backgrounds. That would be their feature, which in 2024 means they get two Origin Feats (already the rule), two skills (one more than the standard Human) and a tool (one more than standard). Plus the added story, which though I think 2024 Backgrounds abandon most story, there's still some story.

This ability would not allow more ASIs than normal character creation.

But, my biggest question regards Heroic Inspiration vs. an additional Skill and Tool.

I like Heroic Inspiration, but it's 1 per long rest. It's not that powerful. It's not as powerful as a Skill and a Tool, IMO.
It doesn't make sense for the Variant Human homebrew rule to not lose anything, so I guess I have to toss it, right?

I like it. It’s pretty simple and straightforward, which is good. I do like the human heroic inspiration though and don’t think it’s underpowered, but the « pick two backgrounds » had its merits.

Maybe is works balance-wise, but not really story-wise. A human likely would not learn two trades by the time they are 18ish which is what the game assumes is the time they decide to become an adventurer. Makes more sense for and elf and a dwarf, but they get enough features.

Should just give them darkvision and be done with it.
