Shadowdark General Thread

I don't find grimdark to be a particularly useful term, aside from as a benchmark to see how similar to GWs stuff something is. If we're talking about grittiness and horror, then I'd probably use those two terms as they are separate dials for campaign feel IMO. Despite my protestations, people do seem to have an idea what the term means in a general sense, so take my distatse as simply personal preference.

Shadowdark is so rules-light in the best ways that I find it hugely simple to "hack", not just for different settings, but for different "moods" or levels of lethality.

Which is why I find it odd when I get pushback from people who insist that the game was designed to be ultra lethal and any other playstyle is incompatible. To each their own, and maybe that was the intention (ie, PCs dying regularly), but from the 2 albeit short-lived campaigns that I actually ran, we had a fine time with some homebrewed dials set to "easy" mode.
