WotBS Professor Ulysses's Burning Sky

Session -1
My group has decided that our next 5e campaign will be War of the Burning Sky. We are using this website as inspiration for character backstories that fit into the campaign world (https://burning-sky.obsidianportal.com/wikis/character-creation).

The group consists of six players that are planning on playing:
  • Half-Orc Cleric Inquisitor Ragesian Refugee
  • Halfling Bard of the College of Cirquelistes from the Wayfarer Theater
  • Half-Elf Monk of the East Wind
  • Half-Orc Barbarian Blitzer Griffin Rider
  • Wood Elf Druid Taranesti Survivor
  • Artificer Gabal's School Student
We will be having a Session 0 to finalize everyone's backstories and bonds.

I hope to use this thread to post summaries of our sessions and seek advice for running the campaign.

I am looking for suggestions for playing with Torrent for a six player party that already includes a cleric. I want the player cleric to feel essential to the party and not overshadowed by Torrent. I am thinking of having Torrent be a practitioner of "battle meditation" (as in KOTOR). This would have her be able to enter a trance and provide buffs to the party. I am thinking of just +1 to attack rolls. This would make the party feel that Torrent is helping without having to have her as an active character during combat. Thoughts?

In my campaigns, Torrent is basically a non-combatant. She will step up if the party requests or if their situation is dire.

She will step in if someone is badly injured to heal them or when asked. Once the party picks up others to travel with the party, she will protect them. Most of the times, I allow the party to direct where she puts her attention, as long as it does not conflict with her ideals, goals, or immediate objectives.

How many companions should I be prepared for the party to have?

I would recommend reading ahead the next couple of modules. There are a number of opportunities for NPCs to travel with the party. In TSoGP (#1) you have Torrent, Haddin, and Crystin. Torrent is their charge, to escort to Seaquen. Haddin and Crystin are completely at the DMs discretion to save them from the Scourge.

[As a side note: All three of the groups I am running through the campaign, all three have either let Haddin die or killed him themselves. The way I play him, there is no real redeeming value to bringing him along, other than the pleading of Crystin.]

There are a couple more in TIFFoI (#2). Tiljann (if she survives) will request to travel along to see the world in the footsteps of Etinifi. Diashan (if he survives) is another NPC who could accompany the party and might turn out to be valuable to the party if they choose to use him as a witness against the Shahalesti.

Overall, I would highly recommend skimming through all the modules beforehand. There are areas where you as DM can foreshadow upcoming events and solidify connections of events in the ongoing plots of each of the factions.

Professor_Ulysses,

Are you using a VTT to play? If so, I have remade a number of the maps which you are free to download and use. Let me know if you are interested.
