D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

Voted 1e+UA as that's closest to the homebrew 1e-adjacent system we use.

We started with UA but have mostly weaned ourselves off it after a few months.

We found specialization breaking our game and the extra classes/spells not really adding much value to us. Im sure once we get really familiar with the core books we might change our tune.

I did keep the +2 level cap for single classed demihumans though.

Last time we played it was 5E. Before that it was B/X via OSE. Now we are playing Shadowdark.

I am genuinely surprised with my group that's playing a 5E game and just started the Vecna adventure. I thought it was "let's finish this campaign and then update" but the group has said they're staying with 5E and not going to 5.5. Interesting.

I'm the inverse. 2014 with some 2024 option. My 2014 group just never really got around to / found a good point to / felt a strong need to update. We allow 2024 material in as it comes up, but we're still based on 2014.

I was wondering about this- what're the primary differences between 14 and 24, if you discount character options like classes, feats, and origins, as well as spells? What states "I'm playing 5e14" vs "I'm playing 5e24" if not those character options and spells?

5e24 has different stealth rules, it has different actions, right? Like the magic action. What else? So is "magic action" and "stealth invisibility" the real determiner of whether you're playing 14 or 24?
Monsters certainly (IMO) don't count- I use monsters from all sorts of sources including 5e24MM.

I think the best (and only?) way to deal with UA is for the DM to go through it with a fine-tooth comb deciding what to keep, what to modify, and what to chuck.

Cavalier is a great class but needs some tweaking to reel it in a bit. Acrobat is unsalvageable. Barbarian is pointless unless you're running a low-to-no-magic setting. The spells are a wide mix - some are good, some can be salvaged, and some are horribly over- or under-powered for their levels. Ditto the magic items. Comeliness is a waste; ditto the overpowered roll-up method.

Cavaliers' percentile stat increments are brilliant and should be given to all classes. Weapon spec is good but needs some tweaking.

I did keep the +2 level cap for single classed demihumans though.

Relaxation of the demi-human level caps is good and there's an argument to be made to mostly remove them outright, but for me that also means tuning down some of the demi-human racial benefits to avoid leaving Humans behind.

Not wanting to spend another $150 for books which aren't different enough from the 5.0 core (certainly not different in the ways I would want) is a big part of my reason.

It ought to be 'What version or its' equivalent'. I've been playing 5e since 2021.

Eh, the 2014/2024 is the 1E/2E, BX/BECMI, 3E/3.5E sort of thing - close enough you can cross-use, but different enough to be noticeable (usually in character creation department).

Appreciate how 1e+UA is listed as a seperate system.

I feel like 2e + The Complete Books plays much differently than just 2e PHB only. My last 2e game was just PHB no other books amd that's how I would play every time. But also get how you dont want to subdivided every edition.

I thought about that, but didn't want to get too into the weeds because you could look at 3E & 3.5E the same with it's character expansion books. I just wanted to get at the "base + .5 versions" of most of the editions - that's enough options there.
