I've seen some odd things on my job. Tonight I found not one but two flashlights on the road. Both of them were turned on. One was in a neighborhood, the other was on the road the neighborhood entrance connects to, but a little ways down. They're the same type of flashlight but different colors. I probably wouldn't have noticed them if they weren't turned on. It's probably safe to assume they belong to the same person. How they got there will remain a mystery. There was a van full of meddling kids and a dog. They said something about missing college students.

I could see this structure at night. I was curious to what it was. The place is a silent retreat run by Jesuits. Looking at it in the dark from far away I had no idea what it was.

Have you seen that you can buy decorative books by the foot? Decorative. Books. By. The. Foot. These books aren't for reading, they're for looking at. These books aren't for making you smarter, they're for making you look smart. The books are sold based on the cover's color, and NOT the content of the book.

Guest: What's this book about?
You: No clue. Never read it.
Guest: How about this one?
You: Nope.
Guest: Have you read any of these books?
You. No way, but doesn't the room look great?
So colorful with all these books.

Unless you're buying books to go on the bookcase that hides the entrance to your secret superhero lair, you don't need to buy books by the foot.

I’ve seen this, yes. But mostly in commercial contexts decades ago. But the commercial spaces mostly moved onto mockups that were hollow- much cheaper, lighter, and easier to store.

Most of the people I’ve heard of doing that on a personal level were doing it to project an image of erudition. In other words, it was decor designed to deceive.
