I'm afraid I have really mixed feelings about this (and the Buffy reboot, for that matter). I just find it really hard to muster any enthusiasm for those without Whedon's involvement... and have absolutely no interest in them with his involvement. It's a shame, but perhaps best just to let those IP die.
Setting the restart between the show and the film is also a difficult choice. That's when they set their novel and graphic novel series, and those became quite stale quite quickly, because there's basically no scope for change or growth. I understand why it's been done (Wash), but can't help but think they would be better either setting it after the film and accepting his absence, or just outright declaring the film invalid.
(Hell, if they really wanted to square the circle, there's no doubt some sort of awful handwave they could pull to set it after the film and bring Wash back.)
