Buffy Reboot Cancelled

Yeah, MotU: Revelations wasn't hated. It had positive viewership numbers and even the critics praised it. It was the also perfect setup for what came after. Loud people on the Internet are not good judges of whether something is liked or hated.
Can someone tell the people who've been in charge of Star Wars the last decade or so that?

Kathleen Kennedy, for better or worse, is out and Dave Filoni, for better or worse, is in charge now so that telling Kennedy strikes me as closing the stable door after the horse has bolted!

It'll be interesting to see if Filoni, who I feel understands fandom and fans, understands this issue better. I suspect he will but counterbalancing that I suspect he's kind of in the process of vanishing up his own arse creatively so I'm not sure it'll result in better work, just fewer knee jerk cancellations. Also there's no way Filoni would have greenlit Andor, absolutely none, whereas Kennedy did so that is a thing to consider.

Which one kneejerk cancelled Acolyte? That's the one I'd be worried about.

I mean, Kennedy was in charge, but I don't think Acolyte was a knee-jerk cancellation, it was a poor ratings cancellation.

Acolyte was weird because it had a strong cast, some really interesting and good ideas, by far the best lightsaber/Jedi fight-scenes outside of the movies (and indeed better than almost all of the movies), and strong visual design, but the storytelling approach was frankly completely incoherent, confusing, staggeringly badly paced, and unreasonable to expect a general audience to engage with, and predictably, they didn't! There was a lot of racist and sexist and naughty word going around just as with TLJ, but unlike TLJ, the story with The Acolyte was such a mess until like literally the last episode or two that it was hard to defend.

Should they have cancelled it? Probably not, especially not with that cast and that amount of great setup. But the showrunner, who also did Russian Doll, Leslye Headland, really didn't seem to account for the different audience and expectations like, at all, and just didn't put the package together well enough to convince that audience. So if I was Disney, I'd have had stern words with her, and if she didn't want to change things up for S2, I'd have replaced her with someone who was going to go with a tighter and more conventional storytelling approach. It got a much more positive reception from critics because they're more used to unconventional and frankly to kind of flaccid storytelling, and more willing to make allowance for it because they know it can pay off. Most audiences do not. Especially not the "Ooooh lightsabers and Jedi are cool!" crowd. It's a real pity because I think the same exact story told much more straightforwardly could have been very successful.

Also I think at this point we must simply forbid flashbacks in Star Wars shows. It's done. You can't have any more for five years. Nope, sorry, no expections. No flashbacks. Not for anyone, not for any reason. As storytelling technique they have been abused to the point of breaking by basically every SW show. You're going to need to re-earn to use them!

Nomen est omen. If you call your show Buffy the vampire slayer, people expect Buffy as main character that kicks ass and slays vampires. Or what ever else, but show called Buffy needs main character named Buffy around which story revolves.

They didn't name show Karate Kid the show, they named it Cobra Kai. With that name, they subverted audience expectations and also told that it's not about (only) Daniel any more. Also, from the start, with teasers and trailers, they were open with show being about "other guy".

Reason why people hated Masters of the Universe: Revelations is because they promised He Man and then killed him off in first episode and switched to Teela.
Cobra Kai still had Daniel as a main character. It just lifted Johnny up as another main character, and not simply the villain; not really any different from what the new Buffy show was doing.
