To be honest, I prefer a soft reboot take to bending over backwards to explain why all the iconic characters of the Realms survived a 100+ year time skip. It would have been nice to just say this at the start of 5e, but that probably would have hurt initial sales of the game.

I would bet there are numerous factors at work, including the fact that the company whose business was put in jeopardy during the 4e shift might be gunshy about tying their fortunes to somebody else's gaming line again.

I wouldn't characterize Pathfinder at #3 as a dip, necessarily. More that Cyberpunk got a really nice surge. The industry as a whole is seeing consistent growth, and a video game tie-in must certainly help.

I have the first edition but never got a chance to play it. I guess this'll be one of those times where I update before getting a chance to play what's already on my shelf. Streamlined character creation and better TARDIS rules make it very appealing.

My memories of TSR are mostly tied up with Dave Gross and Chris Perkins, who ran the magazines during the 90s (and I'll feel dumb if I'm misremembering that). They were incredibly patient with the million ridiculous ideas I sent as queries and consistently gave good, constructive feedback. But...

I've had some of my work collected in that manner. It was paid for when published. I didn't get paid again when it was collected, but that was not expected or required. Everything that happened was above board.

My rl example of why the basic liability protection is there is that, circa 1999, I submitted a race of humanoids bonded with dragon eggs called the dragonborn for one of WotC's magazines. It got rejected, but a few years later dragonborn popped up in an official book. Was it the same race...

I don't know...if I was in WotC's place, I'd probably want to avoid negative backlash from fans, and the announcement of no more magazines ever would probably meet with a lot of negativity. Better to keep people hyped up about the pending release of a new edition. Hopefully, they'll open up...
