    Narnia vs Kong

I saw both. Narnia left me vaguely unsatisfied. It did a credible job of telling the story but it didn't really capture the magic. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen, but I doubt I'll want to see it again. Kong, on the other hand, kicked my butt in a big way. I was hooked from the very...

    Characters in a word

Stupid. He's a dwarf barbarian. Generally it's a matter of the rest of the group winding him up and pointing him in the direction of the bad guys.

Should undead be allowed to speak?

I think it's inappropriate to quibble about things like 'realism' when talking about undead and the things that they can or cannot do. To put it bluntly, they are creatures of magic - and when you start fiddling about with magic, realism goes right out the window. Skeletons walk around without...

Using Detect Evil AKA Another Paladin Thread!

IMC, in order for a person to be any alignment other than Neutral, they would have to actually seek out to do things of that particular alignment. If a player wants to be Good, they have to go out actively pursue an agenda of Doing Good Things. If someone detects as a particular alignment, it is...

Learning to think like a pianist

The best thing you can do at this point is pony up the dough for lessons. I have learned instruments in a variety of ways and have found that while teaching oneself to play is fun and adventurous, its not nearly so quick and efficient as finding a good teacher to help. With the help of a...

    D&D is a Roleplaying Game

Game: fun, social, relaxed, easy-going. If it ain't fun, it ain't a game. Role-playing: each player has their own character and plays them as a unique personality. I have never enjoyed games where the RP was meant to be all-immersive. I've played in plenty of such games and have always been...

DM's Campaign Vision vs. Player preference

It is minor. Sure pictures can add to the gaming experience, but it looks like you are giving them way too much weight. It's the game itself that matters. It's supposed to be about the interactions among the players and the GM during game time. It's about the story being told, the challenges...

Which books bring you to tears?

The Innkeeper's Song by Peter S. Beagle But then, pretty much anything else he's written gets me teary-eyed.

What do you think when DM introduces old PC as an NPC?

I will allow that there are those GMs out there who can introduce old PCs as NPCs and pull it off well ... but in the nearly 25 years that I've played the game I've only ever met one of them. He did an awesome job of tying in several old campaigns into one uber story and left all of us players...

    What is your Gaming Music

We have a mixture of progressive rock/metal with the occasional soundtrack and ambient thrown in. Some features include: Ayreon Brian Eno David Arkenstone Dream Theater Enya Fayman & Fripp Genesis (the old good stuff, not the newer crap stuff) Jethro Tull King Crimson - especially the...

    Vile Poverty

Ale and Whores!! I think that an evil vow of poverty should work something like this: Step 1. Get as much money as you can in as short an amount of time as you can. Lie, cheat, steal, whatever. Step 2. Blow it all on ale, whores, nose candy, and other vile debaucheries. Step 3. Realize...

Typical Player Behavior, or Bad Roleplaying?

2 Issues: 1 - The old PC should never have been able to give magic items to the new PC. 2 - Once the new PC came in, you should have had the old PC fade into the woodwork. Any unfinished business with the old PC should have either been dealt with before the switch or it should have happened...

At my wit's end! Looking for advice on problem players...

p5 is an ass. The sooner you give him the boot, the happier you and your players will be.

Battlemats - do you draw as you go?

I have a stack of note cards with a grid on them. Before a session, I draw each room on its own card (takes 10-15 minutes at most) and then, when the PCs get to a room, I hand the card to one of the players and say, "Draw this on the battlemat." Works like a charm.

Are there avid gamers out there who hate cons?

My God .... poor ventilation .... the horror. I was at a con one extended weekend many years ago that had, as one of it's featured events, a mammoth game of Diplomacy that was slated to play the whole weekend in one huge orgy of negotiation and empire building. They had mapped out the entire...
