D&D 4E Rich Baker on Gnomes in 4E

A stain on my honour My bad. I'll keep the inside voice more .... inside. I do stand by what i meant to state "Powered up races (and classes) discourage good roleplaying (not role players) and encourage marginal role playing (not role players).

D&D 4E Rich Baker on Gnomes in 4E

marginal races I don't think Gnomes are a "marginal" race. I think they lacked a uniqueness of character that would make them different to play than something like a dwarf or halfling would give you. They also seemed slated to fill only the slot of comic releaf in the party and were only viable...

As a player, do you enjoy moral dilemmas and no-win situations?

I defy the no-win situation. It doesn't exist. Sure your actions may result in total failure, but there is no win or lose there is only the journey. And a journey with juicy consequence ladden choices is even better.

    PCs die when...

Not water just the food which was calculated to weigh about 250 lbs. which in 2nd addition left him about 80lbs for the rest of his equipment. However it was ruled that his horse was carrying some of it. The water was a non issue as we could replenish it readily. The save was made so the...

GMing: "getting Even" vs "getting it right"

I agree that you do not want this to happen but realistically there will be times when a player pull some obscure rule out of the bag and viola has the solution. If you can fly with it and essentially dump the whole scenario and wing an adventure then thats probably the prefered way to go...

GMing: "getting Even" vs "getting it right"

I think that the first thing you have to do is decide if you can drop the issue and move on. Only if you can should you even attempt to fix it. If you can't move on then YOU as DM have a problem. In the stargate examples it is easy to justify (having watched the show) when a seemingly...

    PCs die when...

I think the DM in that campaign was doing a (in his words) "boot to the head". Wasn't much vindictiveness in it, just the old "don't do stupid things". We were only 3rd level and had no access to magic that would have helped carry all that stuff. As it was mostly a voyageur style campaign the...

What do you think when DM introduces old PC as an NPC?

This is the key point. Using former PCs is just a tool. Former PCs don't kill campaigns, Bad DMs kill campaigns. I have introduced "favourite" PCs of mine into campaigns before as NPCs and there was, in my opinion, no problem on the side of the players. In fact because I have played many...

How long have you been a DM?

I think we have a winner here for the longest tooth award

A funny thing happened on the way to the Dungeon

Maybe it is if you are trying to get the campaign going quickly, but it doesn't have to be. If you plant some plot hooks for each character (like why they want to be an adventurer) then the party has some purpose and choice. Play down the ones that the party (including the target PC) does not...

How long have you been a DM?

I started DMing the first year I started playing (1980). I have always thought that I was an OK DM. I originally started because back in grade 8/9 there was a huge demand to play and even though we had 6 DMs they all wanted to play as well as DM. I always see myself as a player first and a DM...

    PCs die when...

...they don't buy rations. One time we were chasing some bandits through a desert and the DM kept telling us how many days it took to get from this point to that. Eventually we found the lair after 4 weeks of tracking. The Dm suspecting we were low on food and water asked to see our sheets and...

    The neutrality of druids

I think the idea of Nuetrality with druids was more akin to the nature idea of it. The animals of the forest are neither friend nor foe to anyone of good, evil, law or chaos. The animals followed their own path as did all nature. The druids generally follow this philosophy in that they would not...

    Action Points....REVERSED?!

Interesting idea. I was even thinking of what if you gave inaction points to PCs for out of character play (i mean when they do something that their character shouldn't). Usually this won't happen until they are higher level and have established a character to be out of. Instead of gaining a d6...

Making the poor suckers earn it...

I've done this before and it works as long as you can transfer the character into something at some point and the skill points and feats all work out as if they started at first level in their prefered class. To do this they take commoner as their starting class with the commensurate suck points...
