AD&D 1E What is the best way to generate ability scores for 1e AD&D?

Similar, although sometimes it would also be roll up three characters using that method, pick one.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

Last month there was a Faerun '68 thread about updating Forgotten Realms to a more modern time as inspired by the Blades '68 KS. The big question is what do you want it to add to the game? Tech is the obvious one: guns, cars, trains, telephones, airplanes? What about themes for adventuring...

D&D General Melf's Guide to Greyhawk: The Shield Lands

I did my own read through of Appendix N some years ago. I just went to the used book stores and looked for authors I had never heard of such as Merrit, Fox, Brackett, etc. I was surprised how easy it was to find them, even the specific books mentioned although they had always passed below my...

    AD&D 1E Three Things that can't be Fixed in 1e AD&D

That's similar to what we all did in 1E but we standardized on 1XP/level/day. Then come modifers for things like traveling, visiting new lands, and even training for the one game we used training where it was 10 times that. It was also seen as the solution for PCs on a way to nickel and dime XP...

    AD&D 1E Three Things that can't be Fixed in 1e AD&D

In 1E it took an amount of time to memorize spells. 1st level starting at 15 minutes per spell and then on up IIRC. So, replenishing spells was also a time sink if too many are used. If you fought a magic user but they escaped you'd try and find them before they could get back all their spells...

D&D General How do you do smart chaotic evil?

Build up a reputation of not-evil and not-chaotic so you can blow it on something big.

D&D General Did you realize The Forgotten Realms is the most written fantasy world ever?

As per the Wikipedia list of FR Novels I made a quick count of 351 but some of the anthologies might have been counted twice. Then you have game books. ETA: I went the similar page for WH 40k and stopped after I was past 200 and not even to the halfway point yet (and didn't count audio dramas).

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

More like a small Silk Road type city that blatantly exploits trade traffic in order to just survive. They canonically have no animal husbandry, and unless every tree shown on the map is some sort of magical cornucopia food tree, have no agriculture to speak of and must import the vast majority...

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I thought it would be good to thrown them in as they don't have the usual fixation on fairies, vampires, and werewolves that most Urban Fantasy seems to have.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

Urban fantasy is a literary genre that is typically modern(ish) setting with magical creatures. eg Buffy, VtM, Anita Blake books, etc etc etc ETA: I'll toss in Erin Morgenstern's books The Night Circus and The Starless Sea just because I want to give them a shout out, but they probably fit.

    AD&D 1E Three Things that can't be Fixed in 1e AD&D

Initiative and surprise are a thing, but although we did go through a multitude of different alternative systems, by far the most common among everybody playing AD&D in the 80's was to just keep using the B/X rules although we eventually went to a d10 initiate system in my group. Never heard of...

D&D General D&D 3.5 - splatbook power creep or no?

Ya, it was a decent guideline. Obviously pretty easy to break even for mundane items if taken that every possible things is automatically always present. Still, for the prevalence of magic in 3.x, most of the village in my game were assumed to have a resident cleric and magic user, both low...

How Do you have an adult conversation?

First, I'd talk to the other stakeholders in the game. I'm not going to confront somebody as if I'm speaking for everybody unless I am speaking for everybody. That conversation would also settle on who would do the talking and what the stakes were. Usually, get them to stop the behavior that...

D&D General Melf's Guide to Greyhawk: The Shield Lands

Actually, I'm not sure if I would expect 'gritty', but from my impression of older stuff (if that is where the book is drawing on) I'm expecting more whimsical, weird fantasy type stuff that should probably fit pretty well with the current design scheme. I'm expecting more of "we made up stuff...

WotC WotC Winter 2026 D&D Community Survey

Hrrm. Going off of discussions of heroics on other site, that seems like a good way to structure a game. After all, angering the gods tends to result in decades of epic adventures rather than a soft, sedentary life nobody will remember. As for players avoiding consequences of their actions by...
