D&D General Design issues with 5e

If you squint just right, a lot of that can be dealt with using tool proficiencies in 5E. To talk about gold use, my plan in my next game is to do three stages of gold use. From the very beginning is lifestyle costs. Usually not an issue but I'm going to ascribe penalties and benefits to the...

D&D General The 5e Ninja, would it be a class or a subclass?

I'd say if you have ninja, then you are doing some sort of Not-Japanese fantasy like typical old D&D was Not-European. It would be its own class. Subclasses would be something like grass, those that act as spies and hidden agents living out their entire lives in a false persona, shinobi, the...

AD&D 1E Rules that are kinda cool but everyone forgot

Balance issue as unlike 3E, those characters will have almost twice as many total levels with full abilities as a single classed character with one class due to the (nearly) exponential XP requirements per level. I had a character fake his own death from his party (and wife), and they...

AD&D 1E Rules that are kinda cool but everyone forgot

Well, they are sort of needed if there is multi classing going on with splitting of XP. Ran through the GDQ series with an all elf campaign, and the pure fighter was obviously outclassed by all the Magic-user/<something else> in the party even if he was one level higher than them in fighter. We...

D&D General Hasbro CEO Says AI Integration Has Been "A Clear Success"

I am imagining that it will be much like fair use or transformative art, and anybody can claim anything until somebody takes it to court and gets a ruling on that individual case.

    D&D General 6e guesses

I suspect that the income will be D&D Beyond subscriptions as it will bring in more than book sales. Baring some sort of hail mary play to save a dying game, the next D&D will probably just be D&D Revised or something that doesn't quite match the currently dot system. Powers and abilities will...

AD&D 1E Rules that are kinda cool but everyone forgot

Hirelings were usually overlooked in my experience. I always liked the rules for hiring a gem cutter in the DMG which could improve the value of your gems or ruin them. Pg.30 A weird one that came up when I was looking for rules dealing with blocking movement and such, is that a medium character...

WotC President of D&D consumes own "product"

Say what you will, it has done its job. I now have seen the ad and know they have a new burger.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do You Start At Level 1?

Yes. Can't really know what the campaign is going to be like or what the character or party might need. In our current game, I was asked what my Artificer would take at 3rd. I didn't know but made a guess. What I chose was not what I had guessed because what I thought was would be needed before...

D&D 5E (2014) Your CR limit for an average 1st level party?

CR's not a limiter. It can be any CR so long as the movement is such that they can pick up their one shotted dying party member and run without out it catching up to them.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure 5e24 along with my own 5.24 are fully compatible with 5.5.

    D&D 3.x I miss 3.5 edition

3.x/PF is pretty much what I want out of D&D idea wise. Trouble is that the designers just didn't have the chops to come up with good system for those ideas in my mind. I'd love to run a game, try and fix the tier system and put some thought into how skills are used and run. I just don't think I...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

Ha, that's rich. Gave me a laugh. Anyway, that is an Adventure League thing. It's reasonable that for organized (dare I says 'association') play, you would want standard rules so people don't walk into strange situations. I don't see how it would apply to home play. Indeed, from the printed...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Another option would be to not just give the defender Disadvantage, but also the attacker Advantage. If they lose at that point, then it safe to say that the entire plan has gone off FUBAR from the start.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I'd say the call for initiative comes with the declaration of attack. From there it just gets into how the DM wants to narrate it. Perhaps somebody saw it after it lept. Perhaps was getting prepared to leap but wasn't hidden enough. Perhaps it developed the death lust with the intent to attack...
