Yes. Unless I’m misreading, it doesn’t particularly help you until 5th level, and even then you still need to use your bonus action to move the beast or do other things. Since you will usually want to be using the bonus action hunter’s mark to move to a new target when your mark goes down...

My issue isn’t with concentration/not concentration, it’s that it takes a bonus action to switch targets, which screws with action economy on abilities like the beast master, two weapon fighting, and non-concentration fey companions.

When I play my ranger it’s very similar to your experience. But those utility spells that pop up every once in a while are super useful - the detect spells, rope trick, and lesser restoration in particular.

Only thing I’m considering is making switching your mark a reaction rather than a bonus action after level 7 or so. Maybe 9. Then no action after 15 or so.

Lost Caverns was my favorite when I was younger. Made no sense ecologically but really evocative and atmospheric. Glad to see it live on in 5e.

You could play with all feats granting +1 ASI including origin Feats. That way humans end up with +7 ASI’s total for standard feat progressing classes and other species at +6. Maybe yeah, just like the twilight cleric. I think it has less to do with theme and more to do with class candy. Aberrant sorcerer does both, I think. Fills a thematic niche and bolsters the weaknesses of the sorcerer with extra spells and abilities.

Not to pile on the poor sorcerer. While I can find a varied thematic “package” for most of the classes (evoker, abjurer, diviner, illusionist is a good example to me), I don’t know how clockwork is iconic or fits any kind of broad trope. Shadow, divine, even mental/psionic I would understand...

I make a point of asking them to change this every play test packet. It’s silly to make all of these classes expend every last bit of a resource before they get a tiny bit back - I simply don’t understand the design logic behind it.

I’ve always wondered if malleable illusion can do something like refresh a mirror image spell to continually restore struck illusory forms of the caster. I’d allow it but I don’t know what’s intended.
