Not too long ago someone wrote a book or a series of articles on how a player can liven up an otherwise dull rpg session. One of those ideas listed was identifying an otherwise ordindary NPC or mook and the PC would unexpectedly launch into knowing who the guy was and probably go into another...

The Bulllette, As they hungrily dig for halflings in their burrows :) It was a running gag to. I was playing a halfling thief and the DM got a kick out the statement in MM so every time I played a halfling he'd use the statement above.

You may want to check out Weapons of Legacy from WOTC. It takes an existing magic item and makes it stronger as you gain in levels at the cost of skill points and/or HP. Have fun :)
