Coreldraw mapping

I'm taking a break here & asking if anyone uses/knows of anyone who uses CD to create gaming maps. At this point, I would like to know if anyone else besides me uses it to create maps (getting bored with myself).

Otherwise, just a general asking if what I've posted is of any use to the general gaming public & also looking for ideas/sketches of new things to make. -Jim

Woohoo! I can post again. And not a moment too soon.

No, I don't use Corel Draw but I must say your maps are beautiful! What version of Corel Draw do you use?

Since you asked for ideas... I need a few little maps for a series of mini-encounters where each encounter complete with text, titles, maps, graphics and barcode/publishing info would fit on the front and back of standard 8.5x11 plastisized card stock.

Sound interesting?

stuff

I use CD 9 for everything. As for the idea stuff, I was hoping to swap ideas & maybe convert some plans/ideas from others to computer via sketches, etc. Creating whole modules is a bit much! I'd be glad to assist in something like that but not do all the work! As it is, it takes about a week per floor just to get it to the point (but not the quick, less detailed stuff like the magic shop) where I'm happy with the detail. There's always something wrong/missing with the plans. -Jim

And if this ever gets posted - it's not accessing the MB's that's the problem - it's logging on!!!

I preffer photoshop myself, but I like beauty over substance, lol. I am a vector junkie at work, but for maps, I just like the look of photoshop.

maps

I wish I knew how to do the stuff you "rastor" guys do. I can barely make a circle in Corel photopaint. I only use it to apply plugin effects to some "components" of the draw artwork - before importing the parts back into draw. I'd like to expand outwards when doing maps - more exterior landscape stuff without having to rely on particular fills. -Jim

p.s. beauty over function - sounds like a great debatable subject to me! I think you should make a post for it!

Hello there :)

First of all I just thought I would say that I like your maps - and yes - I think the gaming public will find them useful.

I have been doing some similar images myself for quite some time now - except that mine are totally black & white - and probably best though of as functional (rather than dazzling works of art).

you can find them at the link below if you are interested

http://www.d20reviews.com/csp/page3.html

As you will probably see - the ones that I have come up with are similar to yours (which is purely coincidental - I assure you - as I have been doing these now for quite some time).

To create them I didn't use corel - but a (really cheap) vector graphics program called 'Greenstreet Draw4.'

Anyway, do you have a web-site where you have an archive of all your images? (as it would be a welcome addition to my favourites folder) :)

stuff

I like your maps, I love the chairs in the tower! I'm gonna have to get your permission to "borrow" the style of the design if I may. They look really good. The reason I used color is to give myself more descriptive options (or my version of being limitedly artistic). I can't hold a candle to a lot of these other guys out there with the PS abilities.

Similarity doesn't bother me at all, I'm glad to see someone else with similar stuff. I was "inspired" by maps from Brian's site and www.columbiagames.com world of Harn and of course Pat Nilssons www.swordsandshields.org/ artwork (for those of you reading this who use CC2, there are Harn add-ons available for mapping....)
Maybe we can swap vector ideas/problem solutions.

As for the website,... no. But I help out Brian at www.darkfuries.com a lot. I've taken his bldg gif's of Visira & redrawn them in corel ("this window looks out into someone's bedroom!), and found minor design discrepancies he wasn't aware of. It was mainly to create a roofline overview of the city for a cover. Still lotsa work there & I'm waiting for him to finish moving...
Anyway, send me the link of the vector program, I'd like to check it out. Also, look into www.deneba.com's Canvas program, it's supposed to work on both vector & rastor at the same time...

p.s. I found your thread about uploading maps. I love the maps you made of that wizards lair. Awesome stuff! I'm extremely jealous.... -Jim

Glad you like the maps :)

(oh - and I wasn't criticising your use of colour - I was just saying that mine were similar to yours - except in black & white. I actually think your use of colour works really well)

Anyway, here's the link to the US site for 'greenstreet draw4' (as requested).

http://www.greenstreetsoftware.com/productivity/usa/product/details/071367.htm

...and I just checked out those other sites you pointed out - and they look cool :)

Also - about the chairs I have drawn... feel free to use a similar design for your own maps. I was quite happy how well they turned out as well :) (even if the damn things took me ages to draw - though to look at them they really look quite basic). I don't know about you - but I find that some items can be really tricky to represent in plan view (especially if you are hoping that they can be easily recognised)... and those chairs sure were a b##ch to draw :)

Maybe we can swap vector ideas/problem solutions

I'm always happy to talk 'shop' :)
