Long Spear = Awl Pike?

Hi all,

Probably a stupid question, but is the long spear similar enough to the awl pike that you would treat both as the same weapon, or does the awl pike appear as a seperate weapon somewhere?

I forget the battle off the top of my head, but it was on the History Channel a few months ago on how the phlanax fighting with the long spears fell out of favor. Head on they were nigh undefeatable, but a quick flanking manuveur left them vulnerable to attack, as they could not wheel around easily.

Yup. But these should have at least 20 ft reach. 7m length, after all.

Wouldn't that mean you are holding the very end of the spear? Seems like you'd have a hard time applying any force at the point.

The Macedonian phalanx under Philip II was considered at the time to be invulnerable from the front. Philip's phalangites used the sarissa, a spear that was anywhere from 15-20 feet in length. The weapon was long enough that their were five rows of pikes in front of the first rank of men.

Those phalnaxes must have worked pretty well, seeing that Philip's son conquered most of the known world with them. ;)

Yupp. See below, these dudes used the spear twohanded with more than a meter between their hands, the shields hang around their necks on a belt.

Some shaolin dudes fight too with 7m bamboo sticks... hell of a whip. Horrible to fight against.
