Long Spear = Awl Pike?

I think threatening at 15' and d8 damage is more than enough for an exotic weapon. d10 and threatening at 10' and 15' is just over the top.

I agree on the d8, but I don't have an issue with the 10-15' reach.

I think given the choice between a d8 10-15' sarissa and a 2d6 10' greatspear, I'd be inclined towards the greatspear much of the time.

Particularly if the DM took issue with getting an 18' spear around corners in a dungeon.

There is no reason to believe they mean JUST 10' reach weapons, as that would make no sense at all, and would not be a "for instance".
"For instance" is used to lead into the example of what / who the text applies to.

It makes perfect sence why 10' reach gets such exceptions. If it did not get that exception, a medium creature with a longspear could never attack diagonally.

The wording even syncs up with the wording for creatures with reach.

Which leads to the DMG quote that fully explains how reach interacts with the 2 for one counting system.

Which matches perfectly up with the examples given in the back of the DMG which the following image is painstakingly faithful to.

Let's hear a round of applause for our models today! Purple worm and Eldritch giant confessor [thanks to Righteous Might] represent Gargantuan. Huge, tall goes to all those power gamers who find some way to get that big with a reach weapon. Huge, long was a crowded category, but the huge crocodile will show up much sooner than most PCs like and so it gets to represent. Large was the most crowded size, but the centaur and ogre are the poster children of their respective categories and so grab their spots no contest.

Ah! I knew it was explicit somewhere!

A purple worm with a reach weapon!?

The example could have just as well been a Gargantuan, long centaur type thing. Also a template that gives tentacles could very well use the same distance as a reach weapon.

The square count is quite accurate, I'll assure you.

Can you say it is equivelent. Of course. You can also make up your own.

New Exotic Weapon

Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical Range Weight Type
Sarissa 1d8 1d10 x3 -- 12 lbs Piercing

EDIT: darn 3.5 weapon sizes.

Ok, I have stats given above and just call it a pike. Can't attack adjacent, no small version, oh, and I use the term "adds 10 feet to the reach of the weilder" to avoid super giant sized ones.

The additional -2 versus penalty versus openents 10 feet away is not a bad one, but I am not 100 percent sure it is really needed. You are paying to use the weapon.

Just add the feats from Dragon 331 pages 22-28. You can then attack adjacents, and many other fun things with pole-arms.

Note: When using these feats - Never give an Ogre a Reach weapon coupled with Monkey Grip and an Oversized Pole-Arm. The results are devasting to any creatue hit. :uhoh:
