I wonder what the 3rd party publishers, who are dependant on WotC think?

A question I was considering myself. I was going to post something similar on Necromancer games forum, but it seems only a few people would read it.

I think either approach, drive head-first into 4e, or wait-and-see, has their own risks. Diving head-first will alienate those stick with 3.x. Wait and see could make you irreverent fairly quickly.

Thanks for posting this.

I would like the 2nd path to be 4e already. I'll probably be playing the 1st one when 4e comes out (and even that can be a problem). 6 books of 3.5e adventure (roughly 1 year worth of gaming) after I have already switched will be a problem.

Yes, my group is switching to 4e as soon as the PHB comes out. If the second Adventure Path is not 4e, then I'll probably drop my subscription.

As for publishers, it will be smartest for them to switch over to 4E. At least in a "primary" sense.

Goodman Games has apparently learned that printing for OOP rules sets can be worthwhile (look at their 1E modules), so I bet they, and a few others, may give some continued support to 3E.

I feel sorry for those of you with those 3E books that are not compatible with 4E. At least with me, and my Castles and Crusades rules set, I'll be in a position to use anything I like from any edition. So, just like I do with 3E, anything I like in 4E I'll be able to use in my game.

So another benefit I have discovered with using C&C as my rules base, even with the advent of 4E all my books still stay relevant to my gaming. Including books that catch my eye from the new edition.

So I am glad I have found C&C, or I would be quitting a hobby I have loved for 22+ years due to yet another edition making $1,000's worth of books practically useless.

Nope, I'm not nearly that entertaining.

I'm not up-in-arms as my LOLcats implies, but this is possibly the worst time I could be putting an OGL supplement into layout and earning royalties on it.

Seriously, who's going to buy anything from the 3rd party market while they wait to spend their bucks on the new edition?

Me. Granted, it's mostly fluffy stuff that's systemless, or remaining Malhavoc products with elements of Ptolus/Praemal worldbuilding elements in them, but I am.

And given the probable initial dearth of gnome-lovin' in 4E, I'm very much open to grabbing any good gnome supplements that are higher on fluff than crunch. (I already have the city of Stonebridge from Mongoose.)

I was hoping it would be Paizo since they are doing such an outstanding job, but I think that any company announcing their plans to continue supporting 3.5 gameplay, will gain some very loyal fans & customers.
They might get some loyal customers, but they need to weigh whether the fraction of loyal customers they will gain will be as many as the 4e customers they get if they support the new ruleset. Remember, the early 3e days were a financial boon to many publishers.

Maybe 4E is why Goodman experimented with doing C&C and 1E modules. To see how viable the OOP market is. Since he has done several for both I presume he found them at least moderately viable.

So at the very least Goodman Games may have the courage to continue supporting 3E to some extent.

Remember, third edition is the first edition to have an SRD and OGL. There is nothing stopping anyone from stepping in and filling in WOTC's position as the "official home of 3E".

I think if a respected company, such as Green Ronin, stepped in to fill that void, and was able to make this fact known to the whole 3E consumer group, a larger percentage of gamers than ever before would not move on to the newest edition.

However, if no one steps forward to fill that void, 3E gamers will go the routes every gamer has gone with every edition change that has come before. Move on to 4E, stay with 3E, get out of the hobby entirely, or move to another RPG system entirely.

I hope someone has the desire, and resources, to step forward and fill the void. I would like to see what happens.

Depending on how distinct 4e is from 3e, I could fully see some publishers sticking to the "classic" mechanics of 3e. After all, if 1e-style gaming can find a niche in OSRIC products, I see no reason why 3e can't become a similar "classic" niche.

Of course, the big driving factor will always be "is there an interest in this stuff?" Which is a question that cannot be answered now... far too early. We know next to nothing about 4e and speculation at this point is pretty useless.
