So I decided to purchase a 12 month subscription yesterday and managed to enjoy it for a whole day. When I try to log in today, DDI tells me that my account doesn't exist!

Way to go, Wizards! This is not a quality service. You shouldn't be ironing out problems once you've started to charge people. That's utterly unprofessional.

I don't think their CS for Digital River works on the weekends. Funny that any part of CS for an online services takes days off and not in operation, but that may be the case.

Also there was a few problems others had within the past week with expiring acounts too early or something.

WotC may not have DDI and DR timeframes set up to be compatible yet.

I think the WotC website offers a few problems in the DDI General and Technical subforums, but odds are that nothing can be done until WotC people are at work tomorrow to nail down how to fix it.

But make sure you report it to WotC as well as the subscription house CS so they can both meet on the same page to resolve the problem.

This is also another thought I had. The sliding expiration on the session cookie might not be set properly.

I would agree with this.

Did you contact customer service?
Of course (thanks to this thread giving me the link). And got an auto-reply promising an answer within 2 business days... :(

I had heard that sometimes the authentication issue was browser based, but I could be wrong. i.e. the session cookie may not be stored correctly.
I've changed nothing with my browser settings since yesterday. Also, the error message said "account not found". I doubt that's a browser issue.

Edit: Here is what the error message looks like:

You account expiration date should not be stored in a cookie. This is doing it completely wrong.

The account information should check each time you log in with the account database to see if the server date has exceeded your allowable viewing time.

THEN you get a cookie saying if you are a subscriber or not to access pages with a token that tells the pages in the session cookie that you are a subscriber or not.

Dates of subscriptions should ONLY be on the secured DDI servers.

I may be mis-thinking about what you are saying expires though... The cookie, or the account itself?

The session cookies, they just aren't doing right at all. Have you looked at one of them! But that is a different issue.

I hate this, I hate saying this.... I hate when this is what it takes to fix anything....

Have you cleared your cookies for DDI, and are you using wizards.com to get to DDI?

Seems people had a problem with subscribing to ever get access, because the old cookie never changed when they got their subscription, so your cookie may not be updating to say you are a subscriber yet.

It was a flaw with the cookie when they turned on the DDI cookies that may still exist as the system won't kill that old cookie that doesn't expire.

You might have to kill that cookie yourself and reboot your browser and it MIGHT (slim chance) that your new cookie will sync up with the system.

I can log on fine, but it logs me out after like 30 min (haven't timed it yet). Anyone else encounter this problem?

I was talking about the sliding expiration on the session cookie, not the account data. :) Of course account data needs to be stored in a database with the host systems.

I haven't looked at the cookie yet, though. Old classic asp cookies weren't that great by default, but that was because it was designed for circa 1997-2000. (at least for asp 2.0 and 3.0) :)

This is the sliding expiration on the session cookie.

What that means is, when you log in, the server sets a cookie for your browser to view, called a session cookie. It generally stores information about the site you are visiting, maybe your username, gives you a session ID and sets an expiration time for the cookie to expire, so that you are considered "logged out" after some idle time.

Each time you visit a new page, the server will send a small packet down to update the expiration of the cookie (generally set at 20min by default by Windows IIS servers). Thus, as you visit pages the expiration "slides" to always keep you good for another 20 minutes.
