The Jade Frontier (DM: Ukingsken, Judge: Lord Sessadore)

Cheysuli Sage

[sblock=EDIT / Perception Check]I was running off my passive perception, but while writing the post others made active checks, so if it's ok; I'll do the same and slightly edit my post.
Perception (1d20+1=18)[/sblock]

As the group approach the area marked on the map, Cheysuli unclasps her spear from her pack and focuses her full attention on her surroundings. After a while she addresses the gathered adventurers in a whisper; "I'm surprised such horrid creatures have nested in such a beautiful looking place, it is a great pity that we bring death to a place where the Spirits thrive."

For a moment Chey seems so serene; at one with the forest around her. But then, with a split second change of demeanour (that you are perhaps starting getting used to) the serenity is gone, a predatory snarl replacing it.

"Halt!" Though whispered, the urgency in the command reaches your ears, "I see kobolds ahead. Chances are there will be quite a few of those toothy little lizards over there," she gestures toward the sound of water beating relentlessly on stone, pointing out the kobold moving in the distance. "For once we have the advantage of time to plan the hunt. I have but one thing that I would like to propose; That we keep one of them alive for questioning... preferably one in charge... Lord Hashtesh needs some kind of proof before he will see that there is more going on here than simply kobold over-breeding."

Chey looks from one of the assembled faces to another; hoping to hear agreement to her suggestion.

Brenwar thinks over the plan before replying, "That sounds like a wise idea, we shall incapacitate the one in charge." He glances in the directions of the kobolds while drawing his war hammer, "I'm glad we have better eyes and ears than mine I was to distracted by the wilds to even notice the creatures."

[sblock=OOC]
Perception Check! (1d20+2=6), ouch that was a terrible roll.
[/sblock]

Agreed, Firete says, though she has not seen the kobolds herself. Since there are more of us than before, perhaps we can attack from two sides, this may confuse them.

I don't know how well I can sneak into range, but if I can get within 50 feet or so, I can coat an area with slippery ice and hopefully slow any kind of escape. Let's get them before they notice us. Yishim prepares to sneak forward if he's given the OK.

So this is 2 crits in a row on skill checks. Prepare to be horrified when all the 1s show up during combat.[/sblock]
[sblock=OOC If we decide to try my plan]
I'll be going to sleep soon so out of contact for 10 hours (and I'm on the US west coast). So if you guys decide to go try the plan, Yishim will sneak forward using as much cover as he can to get into position for Icy Terrain in an appropriate location. Don't read on unless someone gives the OK...
[sblock=Stealth Check to get within 50 feet]Stealth check to get within 50 feet (1d20+2=5) And I fail miserably, tripping over a tree or something. Never let the wizard sneak.[/sblock][/sblock]

Brenwar thinks it over a moment before chiming in, "I don't agree we should split up. I'd prefer if we moved as a group and focused our attacks on one of the creatures at a time, at least to the extent to which that is practical. "

He turns to Yishim, "That sounds like a good idea does anyone else have any other long range spells they could use to attack? I won't be of much use until melee is joined."
[sblock=ooc] I vote we lead with the long range spells and then move as a group focus firing so that we take them out quickly. If possible we get Yishim to clear the minions (if there are any).
Also I'm chomping at the bit to level up so by all means let's do this!

As you approach, you hear the conversations cut off suddenly, and the movement stops. You've been spotted!

[sblock=Status]We are now using the group initiative method, which means you go in the order you post. The tracker below just shows who goes before the kobolds this turn. Rolls

Regarding the map, the trees do not hinder movement, although they do provide concealment if you try to shoot someone and the tree is in the way. The river is difficult terrain, not because the water is moving fast, but because the riverbed is covered with slippery stones.

Yishim races forward with a fearlessness that looks at least a little reckless. Channeling arcane energy through his orb, he freezes the ground around the scary looking kobold fighter, and not waiting to see if he's able to drop any of them to their feet, he quickly turns toward the waterfall and causes a fireball to erupt between the slinger and the kobold next to him.

As that last kobold is immolated and falls to the ground, dead, Yishim gasps as he realizes he's left his heavily armored friends behind. Oh Batwings... This isn't good.

[sblock=OOC]So this is when Invisible Castle punishes me for my crits on skill checks earlier :-) But yee haa, my first attack![/sblock]

As Yishim approaches he sees a large kobold carrying a shield who is surrounded by a number of smaller kobolds. The shielded one is standing in a stone circle, the purpose of which is impossible to determine at this time.

Yishim incinerates one of the smaller creatures and causes the larger one to fall to the ground. It then stands, points its sword at the wizard, and screams something in a language you don't understand.

One of the kobolds who nearly avoided getting caught by Yishim's fire loads a small ceramic jar into its sling and chucks it at its attacker. The projectile smashes into a nearby tree, coating the bark with a sticky, tar-like substance, but the wizard is unharmed.

The other kobolds rush the party. Most are careful to remain behind the treeline, but two of the leap into the wizard, stabbing him with their spears.

[sblock=Status]I forgot to mention that the rocky patch is also difficult terrain.

Initiative:
22: Shayla
16: Yishim (14/22)
15: Dragonshield (-5, +2 to all defenses)
15: Slinger (used one gluepot)
15: Minions
15: Chey
4: Brenwar
4: Miranna
3: Firete

The Dragonshield stands and goes into Total Defense, giving him +2 to all defenses until the start of his next turn.

Slinger moves a square uses its gluepot against Yishim, and misses.

Minions 51 and 79 charge Yishim, both hitting for 4 damage a piece. The other minions simply advance to the best of their abilities.

So now everybody gets to go before the kobolds go again. Let's see how this works out.[/sblock]

Seeing Yishim rush off to battle Brenwar runs behind him yelling, "Perhaps us with armor on should be first!" Brenwar arrives to late to stop the two kobolds from pin cushioning his friend, but manages to fend them off a bit with his hammer waving wildly before him. As Brenwar says, "By Palladys, I'm your opponent foul creature!" a small silver owl flits briefly around the head of the kobold.
