D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Securing the Alliance: An Adventure in Tethyr (FULL)

Since this is pre-spellplague, he could have even spent some time in Maztica (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Central/South America) after the Reclamation Wars. The ports in Tethyr/Amn/Calimshan tend to be the embarkation points for trips to Maztica.
Sounds good. I left his general path rather nebulous because, like others, my FR specific knowledge is a little hazy.
[sblock=Lorenzo's Character Sheet]
The only issue I noted was Ability Scores. I'm counting 28 points (including the +2 to DEX and the +1 to WIS from Race and the Weapon Mastery feat)[/sblock]
Somehow the math got away from me, corrected by dropping INT to 10.

[MENTION=95059]Forged Fury[/MENTION], fair points, they are. I may have miscounted my spell selection. I'll pick to replace one of those two spells as soon as I make up my mind which one.

I'll try to send a PM your way over minor illusion, though I didn't expect to really depend on it in combat. It's great for utility too.

Is this adventure focused primarily on combat, or should I expect other things too?

@Zansy Sure thing. The adventure is an existing 3rd Party 5e adventure that I filed the serial numbers off of to fit the over-arching story. There are opportunities for combat, exploration, and some social interaction. As written, there's a decent amount of combat, but I'm pretty open to interesting ways of resolving problems.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Also, don't worry about FR knowledge. I'm not particularly worried about canon and will try to explain anything that needs explaining, assuming your characters would be aware of it.

Okay, I think I'm leaning towards fiendlock...and the backstory ties more neatly into the game's premise. So! This character is an odd duck for me...started out all about arcane firepower, but it changed as I considered possibilities. Still HAS arcane firepower, but when I saw Gauntlets of Ogre Power are Uncommon, I fell in love with this idea of a slip of a girl with oversized mitts who can summon a comically ginormous sword out of nowhere and just smash your face with it. And because fiendlock, the sword is totally metal, with like flaming runes on it and black hilt and...anytime it's summoned it has Gwar music playing behind it. That's part of the magic. It's official. On the sheet and everything.

EDIT - Argh! I got mixed up. We're not starting with magic items in this game. Okay, I'll probably change the pact weapon to a rapier or something. It doesn't substantially change the build. It gives me something to aim for later too. :)

Inamar is a young human woman of slight and slim build and the sullen cynical affectation commonplace in those who have lived much of their lives without the support or care of others and have come out alive. Her clothes are scavenged as often as not; ill-fitting and grimy, and there's generally at least one smudge lurking on her face. It lends her otherwise-pretty features a hint of melancholy or tragedy...a wholly intentional one as well. Inamar knows better than most that nothing keeps purses closed like looking too good, or too well fed. Even now that she's no longer dependent on the carelessness or gullibility of passerbys to live, old habits die hard.

[sblock=Background]Inamar grew up never knowing her parents, being left to an orphanage in Darromar during the bitter civil war that ravaged Tethyr before the Queen's rise. A willful, angry child, she quickly became one of the troublemakers of the orphanage until she finally made good on her threats to leave. She quickly regretted this rash action, but refused to admit defeat. In time she caught the eye of an experienced beggar; an old man who went by the name of Squint. He took her under his wing and helped her learn the skills she'd need to get by on the streets of the city.

But just as things were starting to settle down into a predictable, if not entirely safe or happy, pattern...everything changed overnight. Inamar was attacked in the cul de sac she slept in, hooded, and dragged away as she did her best to fight back. Bound and gagged, she found herself tied down on a table of stone as masked figures chanted and reveled in the light of black candles all around.

As the bizarre ritual reached what must have surely been its height, Inamar managed to worm free of her bonds just as a door on the far end burst open. The priest or mage officiating the ceremony attempted to finish the job by stabbing down at her with a dagger that pulsed with evil intent, but between the distraction of the attack and Inamar's unexpected ability to move, the attack missed her heart. Even so, the cut was deep, and Inamar blacked out quickly.

She awoke some time later from strange nightmarish dreams, and found herself in the care of a small adventuring group who had been tracking down the demon-worshipping cult for some time. It was with some relief that they saw that Inamar was herself. They had fought past victims of that ritual before...whatever was done to them seemed to make them doorways into the world for demons or devils of some kind. The possession that ensued was not simply control of their bodies, but a full transformation that effectively killed the host and resulted in a fiend being fully embodied in the material plane.

While they talked, Inamar became aware of something wrong though. She felt the presence of something else awakening within her. Something that immediately tried to control her, but was easily quashed, sending it into a rage. The ritual, it seemed, had only partially failed. Whatever had been meant to enter the world through her had only a tenuous contact...too weak to do anything but rant and rave inside her head.

Or so it seemed at first. Inamar decided to try to help these people in their goal of finding and eliminating the remaining cult. She pretended it was out of gratitude...but in reality she simply hoped the cult would know how to undo what they'd done. It quickly became apparent to her though that the demon's position was considerably worse than it had seemed at first. Not only could it not control her...but she began to find she could instead control IT. Tap into its powers and call on them in the form of magic. This of course enraged it even more.

Unfortunately, everything the group found pointed to the same conclusion. The ritual, once done, could not be undone by any magic they knew. It was anchored firmly to her, bound up in her very soul...which of course had supposed to have been gone by the time the demon had come in. In the hopes of finding someone who could help, Inamar and the adventurers went before the Queen, who's bidding they'd been doing in eliminating this cult.

None in the court were strong enough to help, but the Queen was sufficiently impressed by Inamar's performance during the affair to offer her a place among the Shadow Stars. In this way she could continue to seek out people and powers that might help...and in the process help Tethyr as well.

Of course, things are never that simple. When the evil within finally came to terms with the stark reality that it wasn't going to be able to simply overpower her will as things stood, it shifted tactics. Now it plays nice, offering 'helpful advice' and ideas... Always looking for some weakness to exploit, or failing that, to turn her onto a darker path. [/sblock]

There is a better than good chance that as 4th level characters, each will start with either a magic item or a decent windfall with which to purchase equipment.

So all that I saw that was needed to fix Krexagh was to re-work his skills, which I had totally messed up. If there is more needed, I'll surely do it, but he seems okay to me now?

Concept: Krexagh discovered very early that he is mechanically gifted, almost like a Gnome instead of a Dwarf. As such, he was the butt of much ridicule and insult growing up. He tried to conform to Dwarvish society, going so far as to try to pursue a career as a soldier as was expected. But he chafed under the discipline, and wound up finding trouble by stealing from his companions. Krexagh felt as if he was pushed to the very fringe of society because of this, and so rather than change to gain more acceptance, he pursued his avocations all the more, only now he actively tried to be shall we say shady with his stealth and mechanical gifts. This led to his speedy discharge and disgrace. Krexagh left his homeland and lost himself in the cities of the human, which he found to be easier pickings for his thievery anyway. He doesn't wish to be totally unlawful and evil, but he feels like the world has made him this way. He hopes and longs for friends and companions who will not judge him too harshly.

This should be better character history is on the way, but I established more information to work with.

[sblock]ANNÀN - UNLOCKED

A LONG TIME AGO, or at least, so it feels, A young elvish man camped under the stars on a Bald patch in the woods. Touching base with his two childhood mates, planning to swap goods, among their other traditions.

The three smiled and laughed as they started a campfire, as a duck was stewing in the pot above it.

"It must have been no less than 75 years since we last saw you, Annàn." Vrattaryn smiled as he sharpened a set of old knives.

"Indeed I know, friends." Annàn answered as he undid his stunning black hair. "this forest is like a second home to me. what have you two been doing while I was gone?"

"Well, I joined in the Tethyrian army." Vrattaryn said, and was immediately cheered on it by Annàn. "Yes, though I mostly joined to learn to fight better. one of these days I'll be a great leader around these parts, and my gang will be better than those rotten dwarves. I need to set myself apart from all the nameless who are out there, stealing eachother's bread." as he spoke, his auburn hair shimmered by the fire, standing apart from even his tanned skin

Annàn raised his brow, it was not quite the reasoning he expected for such an important life choice. he turned to Vrattaryn's sister, who sat farther away, staring into the fire. "How about you, Arafel? what have I missed all these years?"

"A lot." Arafel said quietly, she was not much of a talker.

"Like what?" Annàn smiled, not fully understand.

"It matters not." she answered, looking away.

"It might be best we don't dwell on the past, mate." Vrattaryn whispered to Annàn. "I don't think she ever truly forgave you for knicking her spellbook.

"What? I told you guys so many times already, I did not take that book!" Annàn got upset, he really did steal her spellbook, and is only now beginning to understand it's contents. but he could never admit it. "sure, I tried to read it a few times when I was, how old, 40? but I never took it Arafel. you have to believe me."

Arafel didn't answer.

"Why didn't you just try to get a new one?"

"You know, I almost died when I learned you took it?" Arafel furrows her brow begrudgingly. lifting the hem of her tunic the young lad her stretch marks on her thin stomach.

"it was a good thing we found you in time. It's amazing that you lost all the weight, too."

"the green old lady almost ate me!"

"You know what, fine - I did take your spellbook, and I am sorry for what happened to you." he took the old schooltome from his pouch and returned it to her. "I thought you would have forgotten about it, and wanted to patch things up between us. I was going to give it back tonight to bury the hatchet."

he returned her spellbook to her. it somehow made her even more enraged. she threw the book on him agressively "I... I can't believe you! I could have had a future with this!"

"I said I'm sorry! Let me make it up to yo-" Annàn said as Arafel ran out to the forest. Annàn was about to run after her, when her brother stopped him. "Best leave her to blow off steam, at least the duck is ready" Vrattaryn said. "She will calm down, but you understand why she is mad? you ruined her future as an archmage."

"I didn't realize it at the time; like I said, I was only 40."

"So why did you only return it now?"

"I have learned a few very important and advanced secrets through it, that I couldn't learn otherwise. since I left, I mastered my pickpocketing, using the tricks I learned in the book, I stole valuable documents from a foreign spy, which Queen Zaranda rewarded me handsomely for his apprehension; the money didn't last. aside from that, I studied astronomy and cosmology for the last 30 years, and I'm doing some odd jobs to buy an observatory." after a pause, he continued. "Besides, I have another copy of it, now."

"Ahh... That sounds like quite a handful." Vrattaryn said as the two dug into their meal. "I joined a church of Lathander."

"I thought you hated churches?" Annàn inquired. "What changed?"

"I got caught a tussling a while back with that darn gang bunch of dwarves again. Taking care of Orphans was the only real way I could get amnesty." Vrattaryn said as he perked up. "not a bad job, either, I think I like those kids. I wish I was allowed to teach them to use a blade though. it hurts me that I can't teach them anything that's not in their books."

Shortly afterwards, Arafel returned, soaking wet and covered in dirt and blood, not her own, however. she took step after step, until she approached Annàn.

"Arafel! What happened to you?" the black haired thief tried to reach out for her, only to get his hand slapped away.

"Don't talk." Arafel said, quite upset she parted her filthy red hair. "A curse on you, Annàn. you will leave this place and you won't come back, for you may never wear the hat of a thief again."

she turned to Vrattaryn, her look dark and vindictive.

"Come Vrattar, we are leaving."

without so much of an argument, the two left, as Vrattaryn signed to Annàn to stay in touch."

Annàn did not look to deeply into Arafel's threat at first; it was not until days, maybe weeks after that Annàn noticed his hair was growing shorter. he as tried many things to make it seem longer, and even conceal it with a hat, but every hat he tried on blew off of his head within seconds, as if by a gust of wind. he tried masks, bandanas, makeup - nothing! Annàn panicked, as keeping a hidden identity has suddenly become that much harder. it wasn't until more weeks have passed when he received a call from the Queen Monarch - he has a new mission, and his hair turned white and shrunk as if it was cut short, a disgrace by elven standards. he will have to find some way he could undo Arafel's curse on his missions, for he has no interest in becoming the first bald elf of Faerûn!

I was kind of hoping not to rely on enchantments, but between charm person and illusory script, I can foresee only one right choice.
