D&D 5E Good Sandbox Size for a Region in Forgotten Realms

What's a good size for a "medium" / regional sandbox (but not a hexcrawl) in FR?

It would surely depend on the campaign's desired level range and length. 10x10 miles works fine for a relatively short game, with heroes whose transport options are limited (like Curse of Strahd, which is probably shorter than its level range suggests). A big area suits a game with a lengthy play time, giving you space to seed an appropriate-seeming number of adventure locales.

I'm also unsure why FR would be different in this regard from any other setting.

I'd go with 1 month x 1 month.

I find travel times more usable than distances :)

Yes actually I was thinking along those lines, to be honest. I figure roughly 10 miles/day (adventurers laden with gear, 8 hours travel), so a month worth might be 300 miles, something like that.

Slow pace 20ft/round is 18miles/day. That is about the speed of caravans on normal terrain. In ideal set, that is 540 miles/month.

Horses have normal speed of 60ft/round, that is 55miles/day.

So if you have some town as central "hub" for your sandbox it can be aprox. 100×100 miles. One day by riding at any spot in it from the center.

I'm going to say 200x200 miles as a rough area. Using the travel times for rough terrain that gives you around 2 months of travel from one side of the area to another. I'm working on a home brew setting in about the same sized area.

I would suggest 400 x 400 for a campaign that includes an easily available mode of travel large distances. It gives you more space to put things your adventurers might like to pursue.

As an example, the central hilly area is a little over 200 miles wide. Plenty of room. Multiple kingdoms.

400 miles means two weeks of hard travel to get from end to end. That's a decent size. With something interesting every couple days you can fill a campaign.

Yes my guy inclination was a 400 x 400 mile area, to allow for some wilderness crossing that takes a few weeks.

Lots of varied opinions however, I have put the same poll on other social media sites. Very different views out there!
