Is Find Steed a Core Paladin Ability?

  • Absolutely. Find Steed is the Horse-y Divine Smite.

    Votes: 14 29.2%
  • Sure. It's, like, necessary for being smug.

    Votes: 10 20.8%
  • Meh. It's like cure light wounds, or something, but with a horse.

    Votes: 6 12.5%
  • Not really. I use my spell slots smiting.

    Votes: 4 8.3%
  • No. Paladins don't need a mount to ride in on their high horse.

  • I once saw a Paladin riding a gnome. I'm laughing so hard I can't answer the poll.

As promised (since the poll was created as promised) we can discuss Find Steed. It's absolutely a key feature of the paladin and relegating it a spell (2nd level no less!) is a crime, I say! Paladins have travel right in their job description, under Questing, Sub Paragraph C. How are they supposed to get around? Walk? Buy some dime store donkey like the rest of the group? NO! Paladins travel in style. It's a shame that the days of the paladin's exotic mounts are gone. Now it's just horses from a tawdry second level spell. Injustice I say!

Look, walking may be good enough for the rest of the party but not paladins. Let's be honest, a little walking could do the wizard or some of those other spell casters some good. The ranger and barbarian are probably running around the woods anyway. We should probably be keeping an eye on that sneaky rogue from higher ground. So really, the bonded mount of yore is key for the paladin. Walking is just so...common.

Besides, bragging about smiting just isn't good enough. Paladins need something to brag about all the time. It's how you know paladins are so awesome. They'll tell you. It's really just common courtesy on their part. So why make take something away from them. So the other classes can feel good? Pffft

Whether it is an ability, a spell, or a gooble - it is there and it works for paladins want it and paladins that do not choose to use it are not forced to do so. Making it a spell has limited implications, mostly so that a bard could take it should they desire to do so, but for the most part it is a non-issue.

My paladins (either my PCs or PCs in games I DM) tend to cast this as soon as they can and make use of the mount whenever it is possible to have it present.

In another, quite unrelated thread, someone mistyped and came out with "shambling mount".

The imagery was too strong to resist - I'm seeing Don Quixote as a paladin, who does Find Steed and gets Sancho Panza's donkey.

Wouldn't this be better?
