D&D 5E Pedantic pet peeves

I've heard people pronounce the 'd' in 2d6, for example, as two die six, instead of two dee six.

I always assumed it was the latter though I'm not sure if I read it somewhere or not.

Also, speaking of dice, one of my pet peeves is modules listing something as 2-5 instead of 1d4+1 and forcing you to figure out what dice to roll.

I only ever met one person who said that, but it was jarring as heck.

On the other hand, I appreciate that early editions of D&D forced me to figure stuff out. I attribute some of my mathematical and linguistic literacy to that. D&D was a formative tool in my (ex-curricular) education.

I use both of those, mostly situationally. As in, if I’m introducing someone to the game, I’m more likely to use the former than the latter. But I do say both.

I was a math nerd and D&D was awesome for that. For me, I actually enjoyed figuring this stuff out. I, too, attribute my linguistic literacy to D&D. Heck, linguist is my current job and it's in large part due to D&D, RPGs in particular.

It was never a big deal (at least for me), which is why I think a "pedantic pet peeve" thread is the perfect place to complain about it! :)

From the AD&D PHB. Take a look at the Open Hand Damage column.

The 1-3 and 3-9?

I always did those as d6 rolls, counting 4s as 1s, 5s as 2s, and 6s as 3s.
1-2 = 1, 3-4 = 2, 5-6 = 3 - that's how I've done a d3 since forever.

I've also got a couple of actual d3s - six-sideds numbered 1-2-3 twice - which are very annoying when they get mixed in with my regular d6s...

The reason I did it the way I did was because I had a concern that my dice could be less than fair- IOW, favor some numbers more than others. If I have an unfair die, your method- while simpler and more intuitive- would compound the skewing of results.

Note that I don’t think my dice are ACTUALLY unfair, but I’ve had some since 1977, and wear happens. So it’s possible.
