Garthanos

Arcadian Knight
The Deva was such a great concept. 1 part Gandalf and one part doctor who... I wish they were in 5e
They are highly skinnable. Slight adjustments and they are even more incredible. Make the resistances gained be variable like with a subspecies. (Different opposites not just radiant and necrotic like Fire and Ice). Elric of Melnibone the eternal Champion. Or King Arthur the Once and Future king aka the Dragon reborn (Wheel of Time).

I'm going in with 4e soon. Have got the offline character builder up and running and waiting for eBay and the books. I wasn't doing D&D games when this version landed so it is new to me.

I started in 81 with AD&D, but moved into other games, only returning to F20 via Dragon Age (levels and HPs) and 13th Age. I've since run a lot of PF2e, which I got instead of 5e and am really enjoying a True20 series that I am running.

Reading up on 4e, I love it. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays. It feels a touch contrary now, but I do play 5e with friends and think it is 'OK'. Game wise it doesn't do much for me, but fun times nevertheless.

Setting wise I'll start in Point of Light, but Thule, Blackmoor, Greyhawk and others beckon.

Best of luck! I'm a diehard fan too, though for very different reasons. You've got at least 20 years gaming experience ahead of me :p

Solitary Role Playing
Two days ago I was looking at my 4e books thinking maybe I should give it another go. I abandoned it after one year of regular play. Maybe it needs a second chance. Then after reading some more I remembered why I stopped playing it. I would not play 4e again.

consider dropping +1/2 per level bonus to everything.

It gives lot more room for various CRs from MM to be included into battles.

Thanks, but it's no that. It is far more tactical than what I want from my D&D. I already play war-games. I'm looking for something else when I play rpgs.

4e is a great monster resource, still. I think it's one of the reasons I like GiffyGlyph's monster builder, which is basically "How to make 4e monsters for 5e D&D."

Yup, I personally use the Proficiency bonus (called Adventuring Bonus, to avoid being confused for the weapon proficiency bonus from 4e) from 5e instead. It make success a little easier for the first few levels, but after a time, it helps to avoid the bonus treadmill. Same with the +X weapons.

I usually decrease all Defenses by 2 for the monsters and half-hp. Makes the combat faster.

I think it wouldn't be too hard to mechanically convert a 4e class into a 5e class or vice versa, or convert a 4e monster into a 5e monster.

---

First problem is that HP don't scale the same, and 4e character lacks HD.
Second problem is that damage scales a bit differently in 4e than 5e.
Third problem is that attributes scale from 1 to 30 more than they do in 5e from 1 to 20.
Forth problem is "attack vs fortitude" vs "force con save", and FRW defences vs attribute saves.
Fifth problem is magic item scaling differences, and attunement vs daily powers+christmas tree.
Sixth problem is 1/2 level bonus vs proficiency bonus.
Seventh problem is the +2-3 attack bonus on weapons.
Eighth problem is the OA/Reaction mechanics and expected OA triggers are different.

---

None of those look really hard to work around.

The characters will play a little bit differently than 5e characters would; for example, the Ranger wouldn't suck.

Similarly, mechanically converting 4e monsters into 5e monsters doesn't look hard. You'd start with stripping out level scaling on a bunch of stuff.
