Agreed. I have said this here before, but the idea of going through the whole cycle of "when-will-they-update-X-in-6th-edition" for years instead of new storylines, new expansions, and even entirely new games form Wizards would be quite the downer for me. The game is great...develop it now in new frontiers where D&D has never gone before.Seems like a vocal minority of folks enjoy reading the tea leaves for a 6E, when from a financial standpoint it would seem insane to kill the golden goose 5E when it hasn't yet peaked in sales.
wotc has something big cooking if they are moving more designer in to place, if not 6e then it will be something else.

Yes, he was on the world building team, his 9-5 was making Settings for the card game and writing the text for the Art of Magic the Gathering books. Those books were excellent, and Wyatt's mandate was to make the text serve as system-neutral campaign setting books. He was still DMing D&D in his downtime, and to avoid burning out on worldbuilding, he simply set his home games in the Magic Setting he was working on, and got permission to prettify his DM notes and put them up for free, and that is what started up the Magic/D&D collaboration.Do we even know what James was working on for MtG?

Exactly right—but from a nonfinancial standpoint there are a couple of reasons to go ahead and create a new (or revised) edition:
1) you think the game could be improved mechanically in a way that would enhance players' experiences without alienating other players or pissing them off about having to replace already-purchased products;
2) you need to purge "problematic" elements from the game, whether thematic or mechanical.
(If you want to be more precise, you can replace "nonfinancial" with "less directly financial" in my opening sentence.)
