Miniature Organization

I realize this doesn't apply to everyone, but I am curious how those with miniatures organize them?

To clarify, I don't mean what cases or displays, but rather, how do you group them when you hundreds or several thousand? I sometimes go by classification, ie. undead, tribal, etc. And other times I group them by adventures I have written.

Curious to see how others do it. Thanks.

I have around 850. I keep them in zip lock bags with labeled 3x5 cards
.. Humanoids are separated by subtype. Heroes and evil people, are in their own bags. I also keep an up to date written lists of my minis.

PCs by archetype (wizards, thieves, etc), then by humanoids in groups of same species. Then undead. Then dragons. Then giants. Then animals. And the rest of the monsters by size sort of.

I have an under-the-bed plastic tote, which I partitioned off into six sections with cardboard dividers: animals, vermin, outsiders/elementals, magical beasts/aberrations, constructs/undead, and giants. Then I have a few plastic cases (that once held grapes or strawberries) with my humans, elves/dwarves, reptilian humanoids, and monstrous humanoids - those are stored in a dresser drawer in my game room, along with my beholders minis boxed set and some oversized plastic models I use for D&D minis (a few dinosaurs, a cyclops, a chimera, a hydra, an elephant, a rhino, and some giant bugs). The dragons, for the most part, are kept in a display case. And then, in my game room closet, I have three large pickle jars containing my oddball assortment of aquatic creatures, skeletal dinosaurs, and various animals/dinosaurs that I can use as minis if I don't worry overly much about the proper scale.

The "minis" I made myself out of cardboard, construction paper, and crafting paper (stone colossus, wood colossus, zygomind, walking brain, retriever) are on display on top of various bookcases, along with similar items like my scale-model expanded Daern's instant fortress and the riverboat that crosses the River Styx.

We have a large fishing box (Smoking Joe's 1994) that comes with dividers built in and the trays pull out. The minis are grouped loosely with undead in a few and orcs in another. Humanoids may be in trays with fighter-types and magic-types. In the bottom are larger dividers that fit large and even huge minis. These are more grouped by how they fit with maybe ogres and giants near each other and demons in another.

I bought a few of these in different depths/sizes and then labelled the front. Elves, Orcs & Goblins, Humanoid Monsters, etc. Different groups based on what I figured was best for me as the DM to be able to grab the appropriate figure quickly if needed.

I have them grouped by type. I also recently started a spreadsheet to help keep track. I keep bigger minis and ones I plan to use in upcoming sessions on display shelves atop my bookshelves.

That is quite the storage design. Three locations. Awesome. Hopefully they are everywhere you look, this way they can bring a smile to your face when you are roaming around your house. :)
