But in this case, you can pay $8 and pretend to be a hardcore player.

So, @Morrus has to make a bunch of $8 buttons with the EN World logo, with "Hardcore" under the name. It is even blue, like a checkmark.

I mean, we joke about the whole casual/hardcore/gatekeeping topic, but is there even a 'hardcore' scene for 5e?? I really just cannot see it, certainly not out of the box.

What do you mean by hardcore? As in hard mode or you play the game a lot?

I don't know if it is still the case, but I remember one poster was playing 3 different 5e games a week. That seems pretty hardcore to me.

In our game, we play death at 0, no healers, armor with DR, and a "vitality" points system that I think some would feel is pretty hardcore (like any critical hit is potential death).

Does it need to be out of the box? It's a decent system that seems to work well enough for a lot of people. Hardcore D&D players have always been a niche in a niche hobby in my experience. If they didn't allow 3PP to modify and tweak to satisfy those niches, I can see why it would be a bigger issue.

But if you can't find someone to play with the HARD CORE(tm) add-on, maybe that's just because most people don't want that. Which sucks, I know. Been there, done that, didn't even get the t-shirt because nobody else was around. But it's also just a reality, mass market games simply don't try to cater to everyone out of the box.

Yeah, if to fit the vision held by @Henadic Theologian I would think so, which I guess just isnt what (IMO) 5e is about. Its a Square Peg/Round Hole. 5e is not intended to be, what the OP is looking for, in my estimation.

What do you mean by hardcore?

Essentially running the game in a way which demands significant time investment and/or system mastery.

I just dont think 5e is that game.
