The Slave and Her Sovereign

The tension is palpable. All recognize the menace of the aptly-named Legion of Ruth, the Bladeling Horde. What can it mean that Bita-Bahlin has forged some alliance with this existential threat to Empire? Double or treble the numbers? Bladelings all? Or someone, something else? Where do his loyalties lie?

Surely these thoughts run through the minds of Ibhea, Chanvati, Pa'avu, and Bita-Bousseh, partly informed, at least, of the complex machinations that power bureaucracy, hierarchy, armies--an arcane arc of a chess match.

But some are not frozen in thought. QAMRA leaps into action. In a flash, she vaults into a front handspring, pulling her longsword from its scabbard with a hiss all in the same motion. Before any can even register the gravity of her move, she strikes the horn hanging from the Tiefling's neck.

"No horns," the girl says. "Enough blood to be spilled already."

Mouths gape.

"Ibhea, quite a companion you've ... acquired," remarks Chanvati.

Then Pa'avu recognizes Qamra, the slavegirl taken to Bantouk and diverted from her true purpose. A smile traces itself across the Half-giant's face. "Well met, girl. You seem to have found a home," rumbles the Goliath in her deep tone.




Qamra makes an Ardent Strike attack to execute the stunt and strike the horn in two, r(3) +12 = 15 vs 21 AC. Failure.

Complication
: The Level +6 Encounter Budget differential was reduced by 4 (with the arrival of C + P +BB + H) to Level +2. The complication is that I'm increasing the budget by +2 (8 more Minion Artillery) to Level +4.




The horn is torn from Bita-Bahlin's hands by Qamra's strike, the leather strap around his neck sundered. It falls in what seems like slow motion, spinning end over end, slamming into the ground until it finally comes to a rest without sound.

Like Bita-Bahlin's own, everyone's eyes pivot from the ground back to the participants. He smiles at Qamra, raises his hands to give her a small clapping ovation, and then uses his pinky fingers to amplify an enormously shrill whistle from his mouth.

"Foolish child. The horn is merely an affectation. A bit of prestige. My camp is not far. I don't need a bellowing horn to reinforce us here."

The sound of thundering hooves coming this way echoes in the night.

"You really should learn some manners though." Bita-Bahlin's sword explodes into his hand and he lashes with his blade like the strike of a serpent, intent on disarming Qamra.

Failure here and Qamra is dazed (save ends) to start the coming combat.
 

At the tiefling's words, PA'AVU's encouraging smile morphs into a menacing snarl and her eyes narrow with fierce intent.

An infrasonic growl begins to grow deep within her throat, causing the hair on the neck of anyone nearby to stand on end. Almost before Bita-Bahlin's hand begins to reach for his sword, the goliath explodes into action, closing the distance between them to place her immense body protectively in front of the child warrior he thinks to admonish.

Easily catching his wrist and stopping its downswing - so puny in the grasp of her own massive fist - Pa'avu glares down at him from her superior height. At last giving the growl voice, the goliath grates out, "
You are no teacher of manners, sl'bot'n um'zan k'jah!*"

* a shocking insult in Giantish whose literal meaning is "dirty little snake", used for opponents of lesser height and morals




Pa'avu uses her great size and strength to make a Primary Skill Intimidate check: r(10) + 12 = 22 vs. 16 Moderate DC. Success!

Bita-Bahlin looks at the hand that intercepted his wrist with ferocity and sheer will.

“Do you know where fire comes from?” He looks at the Goliath. Into her he peers with eyes aflame. But not the “mere” flamd born on infernal bloodlines. Something more…

The hand that holds his wrist begins to detect the flickering flame of the candle…the hungry bite of the lit torch…the searing, all-to-cinders annihilation of pyroclasm.

“Not from the celestial orb of the day’s sky…from the bowels of the earth. From the mountain that burns…”

It feels as if the Tiefling becomes wreathed in the heat of creation which bore the first age.

Failure means Pa’avu (or Hazard if he protects her) begins the combat down a Healing Surge worth of HP.
 

At Bita-Bahlin's allusion to Vezzuvu, IBHEA'S heart grows cold. But not with fear of the threat of the Primordial force of destruction. No, the whisky priest's heart dims with the frozen emotion of crystallized loathing.

"What have you to do with the Mountain That Burns, cur? Regardless, you are wrong! Fire has many sources and manifold forms: the searing heat of Omthala, the brimstone emanations of your ancestors, and, above all, the cold, black flames of Delban's wrath!" he shouts.

Ibhea thrusts his rusted, pitted rod wreathed in a black miasma in the direction of the Tiefling. Darkness flares to produce a sphere of writhing tendrils that crush his foe in their icy grip.





Ibhea makes a Shadow Tentacles Encounter Power attack (with his new magic item reward (for color here, really), a Rod of Corruption +1) to counteract the Tiefling's flames with arcane cold. He's utilizing the +2 forward from earlier, r(10) +9 +2 = 21 vs 19 Reflex. Hit. Success.

Bita-Bahlin’s head snaps backs and his teeth grit as he grabs and pulls and twists to extricate himself from the icy grip of the frozen-shadow tentacles. When the manifestation retreats from this world, he falls to the ground, landing in a stooped position, visibly reeling from the cold.

The Legion of Ruth is anxious to roll over you. The Tiefling’s hand flies up to halt their advance.

He looks at the ground while speaking through his teeth. “Do you not understand? I am here, because I know the Empress and her council! Who do you think sent Caiphon cultists into The Hinterlands to round up Omthala’s touched and most effective proselytizers? They did! There is an alien scourge at the core of Bantouk’s leadership and elite class! Bent on subverting our terrestrial-given form and will to celestial madness! Vezzuvu’s cleansing purge by fire is the only way out of this! Cut out the infection! Cauterize the wound!”

He stands up, looks around, and pleads with upturned hands. Tempered and controlled; “…do you not see?”

(2) Do you get him to reveal more? If so, how? Or do you take accounts directly from his mind?

CHANVATI has long contemplated this brother to his consort, her twin, in fact. Powerful? There can be no doubt. Ruthless? Indeed, as his actions at Ruffly Gelded amply demonstrated. Conniving? Clearly. But the true question remains a mystery: unstable madman or performative opportunist? And he and Ibhea share some sordid past. Very interesting.

Then the Merchant Prince notices the heraldic seal upon the sinister shoulder guards of the warriors of the Legion of Ruth, so different from the symbols upon their shields and tabards: an open pair of scaled hands, gules, rearing above a diamond, sable. That is no part of their iconography! Nor that of any Primordial power of which he's aware. No, that coat of arms belongs to one of the Archdukes of Hell!

"You weave a pretty story of fervent belief, apostasy in the name of patriotism, and a claim to greater insight than any here might have. But who is your true master, Bita-Bahlin? Your true goals? SHOW ME!"

Chanvati thrusts his mind into that of the Tiefling magistrate. What is revealed there staggers. <<A montage of images.>> Much of what Bita-Bahlin claims is truth. He attempts a delicate threading of needle between the crushing onslaught of an unstoppable force and the rotten core of Empire, corrupted from within by an alien threat. Mad council meetings in the Imperial Halls of Bantouk. Fraught negotiations with The Legion of Ruth and their promise of purging, Primordial flame. And yet he omits much. Nowhere in the flashing images does Bita-Bahlin witness the Empress herself conspiring with her Caiphonian-tainted councilors. This special cohort assigned to Bita-Bahlin, personally. And always present, though never visible: an enormous entity exerting influence in the background, half-serpent scaled in yellow brown, topped by a muscular humanoid torso with bald, horned head and slitted yellow serpentine eyes: Mammon, Archduke of the Hells!

Chanvati withdraws his psyche from the Tiefling.

"Bita-Bousseh, dear," he says calmly, "you must be so very disappointed in your brother. A crusader, a true believer with much promise: corrupted by his own greed and dark promises from an Infernal patron. Pathetic, really."




What I'm looking to establish here is that much of Bita-Bahlin's story is truth, but there remain unrevealed facets: (i) the Empire is compromised from within by Caiphonian schemers, but (ii) the Empress may or may not be involved with and/or aware of these machinations; (iii) the Legion of Ruth does promise a great Purge through the flames of the Mountain That Burns, but (iv) whether that means the demise of the Empire of Hageri is unclear; (v) Bita-Bahlin is, above all, an opportunist who literally has sold his soul to a devil, that the Nine Hells have taken an interest in this cosmic battlefield in the mortal realm involving divine, arcane, alien and Primordial forces.

Chanvati makes a Secondary Skill History check to recognize the recondite Infernal heraldry, +13 vs 11 Easy DC = autosuccess, as a +2 bonus to his Mind Thrust attack to read Bita-Bahlin's thoughts through force, r(10) +9 +2 = 21 vs 19 Will. Success.

"Well, this was supposed to be easy. I come to the Hinterlands to ensure the various celestial deities and their material henchmen are no threat. I return to Bantouk under the guise of 'job well done,' welcomed by my contacts in the military to unseat The Empress and her Council. Caiphon's corruption purged. The Legion of Ruth and Vezzuvu happy with their purge. And the Lord of Minauros, and his worldly servant <bows>, fattens his impossibly large purse with all of the Empire's wealth."

Dramatically, "...but no...you_have_to_play the hero. Fools."

Turning to his gathered minions. "No matter. Raise the standards for the rest of our forces. I guess this ends in more carnage than we intended."

The standard-bearers of the phalanx move to raise their standards high in the night sky, signaling the rest of the force to rally on Dolg Hana.





Alright, Consequence for Failure here is I'm increasing the encounter budget by +2 further (I'll figure out what that is if it comes to it) for a total of Level +6. That is all of his forces. Of note:

* You're going to get 2 x Hindering Terrains in this coming combat that you are immune to; The Iron Gorgon Goliaths + The Blessed Consecrating the Church. So that will aid you in the coming conflict if you get enemies adjacent.

* Despite it going to Level +6, you're going to have a TON of units for Team PC and all the related synergies (including mostly full resources).

* If you want to just opt into this "all out combat" (like Rorschache in the YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME prison scene), you can go ahead and do so (just vignette that). We'll close out the SC (you'll get xp for it like always). If you do this and you win, that will unlock you having the ability to parley with the rest of The Legion of Ruth to quell their incoming surge to lay waste to Bantouk by the purging fire and might of Vezzuvu.

I found the bolded bits very tempting as a player, but having talked the option over at length with @Nephis , we realized that only Chanvati has a vested interest in risking everything to preserve the status quo in Bantouk (to some degree, at least); the others range from deeply commited to overturning the current celestial order, and its mortal hierarchy, (Ibhea) to personally commited to protecting Qamra (Pa'avu) and, by extension, the Blessed (Arunny). For all characters, Caiphon has become a major nemesis, and averting the Legion of Ruth and its invasion as a way of weakening/counterbalancing Caiphonian agents within the Empire seems unwise at this point.

Further, both @Nephis and I are interested in exploring the Legion of Ruth, its nature as mortal force of Vezzuvu, and other such matters further; opting in to a deceleration now would work against that, to an extent.

Anyway, with this rationale in mind, we're going to make a futher move in the SC and see where that takes us. The attempt here, as should become obvious, is to avert a bolstering of Bita-Bahlin's forces (mechanically, retaining the L+4 status of the encounter with the first bullet-pointed parameter above intact).



"You think me playing the hero, do you, Bita-Bahlin?" CHANVATI begins declaiming. "Well, then, why do you not face us, heroes to heroes? There is no need to call in reinforcements. Surely a wily agent of the Lord of the Third recalls how his master lost in his greed-driven gambit to overthrow Mephistopheles at the Battle of Ten Thousand Tridents, not through a deficit in numbers but--quite the opposite--through the intervention of The Lord of the Nine Hells against Mammon. Asmodeus grew irate at Mammon's attempt to overwhelm the legions of Mephisopheles, and so, despite the numerical advantage against his foe, the Lord of the Third was checked by a power greater than he had bargained for as enemy. Mammon's forces won the battle but were driven back by the combined might of Asmodeus and his daughter, Glasya, rebuking Mammon's greed and restoring order to The Hells."

As the psion continues his oration, he catches sight of Arunny, fairly glowing with the power of her goddess, even here under the moonlight, and he feels his bravado surge, for with these servants of Omthala at his side, what might he not accomplish?!?

"Think how your master would 'reward' his servant were you to bring similar ruin upon his schemes in valuing protecting your own skin above any other concerns! Better to fall here in this backwater settlement than face such reprisal. Or do you not believe yourself potent enough to take us? Ah, that would explain your flight from the burning meeting hall. A mystery solved, Bita-Bousseh, at last! Cowardice is our answer!" Chanvati imbues his goading lure with psionic potency, the better to weaken the resolve of his opponent.

The merchant prince turns to face his consort and casually throws his hands out at his side in a gesture of resignation at having missed so obvious a clue.




Chanvati makes a Secondary Skill History check (I'm actually going to make this against the Moderate DC rather than Easy since the nature of the information is so esoteric and I don't think warrants an autosuccess for the bonus), r(7) +13 = 20 vs 16 Moderate DC; success for +2 bonus forward. He also receives a +1 bonus from Arunny's Group Diplomacy and expends Adept's Insight for a further 1d4+1 bonus to his Primary Skill Diplomacy check, r(10) +13 +2 +1 +r(2)+1 = 29 vs 16 Moderate DC. Success.

To clarify my intent, should this not be clear, Chanvati is using Diplomacy here to influence Bita-Bahlin's sense of pride, independence, and fear of reprisal to goad him into overconfidence.

MECHANICS

Your Encounter Budget is Level +4 (so the equivalent of 11 units). Your goal is to destroy your enemies though if you defeat Bita-Bahlin, you can start an intra-combat SC to cease hostilities with the rest of the LoR (of-level, Complexity 1, standard actions for Primary Checks).

* Illumination is not an issue. The moon is full and a massive pyre billows flames into the sky offscreen!

* Fieldstone Walls squares are 8 ft high Challenging Terrain, scalable with DC 10 Athletics (at normal speed) or Climb Speed and traversable with DC 12 Acrobatics. They provide Cover vs or Superior Cover if adjacent (pending). They can be stunted.

* Brown squares are Difficult Terrain due to heavily rutted and cratered roadway. The ancient, crumbling steps to the church (D9 and D10) are also Difficult Terrain.

* The Church (4 x 4 black squares) has been consecrated by The Blessed in the name of the three deities; Omthala, The Moon Maiden, The Shadowed Sun. It is Blocking Terrain and the squares adjacent are Hindering Terrain for your enemies. QAMRA narrows her eyes at the bureaucrat's emotionless command for mass murder. An agent of the Empress and a Lord of the Hells, both! Such a one will not leave this battlefield.

And so she strides in, purposefully, and strikes him an ardent blow, recompense for his snide remark about her assault on his horn. Then she issues a challenge to the Tiefling and the nearest phalanxes of Bladeling warriors: "You tried to hurt me and my girlfriends. But I didn't have a sword then. Let's see what you can do now!"

PA'AVU gives a grunt and a nod of satisfaction at the young warrior's speech and actions. Then, with a blood-curdling cry, the goliath springs into action. She heads straight for her comrade's treacherous brother, as an arrow to its target, letting loose Velmech'ti at the end of her charge.

Before the tiefling can react, she grabs his tail and yanks, a move that forcefully throws him to the ground. She moves closer to two of the phalanxes of his bladeling allies, attempting to shove them away, but at least disrupting their attacks. In both triumph and frustration, she lets out another scream, causing Bita-Bahlin to cringe and roll further away from her.

At the sight of Pa'avu tossing her brother like some ragdoll, BITA-BOUSSEH smirks in ironic amusement. "You self-serving, double-crossing bastard of a brother! You are an embarrassment to our family line. But your master will have my revenge for me: an eternity of torment in the serpent pits of his dismal swamp!"

And with her invoked promise, her voice resonates with awe-inducing power; her eyes flash; her scarlet hair verily floats in a halo of static energy about her head. Bita-Bahlin scampers away in terror, drawing too close to the sanctified temple, thus feeling its wrath.

With hardly a thought, Bita-Bousseh points a finger and glares at one of the Bladeling javelineers. "You: Die!" And the enemy obliges.

Then the Tiefling strides confidently forward to stand beside her consort.

Sniveling and cranky, BITA-BAHLIN crawls on all fours away from the divine sting of the consecrated church, all the while silver-tongued promises of glorious combat in hell's eternal war assail the two warriors before him.

When he arrives at the foot of the young, Omthalan knight, he draws his blade and discharges lightning and fire. Despite her hell-induced stupor, The Blessed knight somehow manages to fend off the fireborn tiefling's attacks.

Omthala, The Moon Maiden, and Delban have the last laugh.

In the end, after a calamitous noise, Hazard, Chanvati, and Bita-Bousseh are besieged by superior numbers in a terrible melee while Qamra and Pa'avu suffer the same razorswarm plight of shields, barbs, and spears near the consecrated church.

ARUNNY takes a moment to center herself to consider her position on this new war-board where she and her allies find themselves. Each movement of pawn or king can shift the balance of the combat.

Clearly, the Red King must be handled, but so too his pieces. He is not himself the player - that one remains unseen - but he will be difficult to depose. Some breathing space is what they all need, and time to maneuver into better positions, out of the swarms.

The lips of Omthala's Searing Voice move, but the Voice itself is unheard as a rumbling sound begins to thunder. Arunny waves her arms as if conducting an orchestra, hitting one Phalanx with a thunderous cloud that explodes to purple reverberations, leaving all enemies within it stunned and wounded. The Red King and the other Phalanx defending him are dazed by the fallout of her attack.

Taking advantage of her effect upon these enemies, the seer uses the Moon's Light to shift her allies around the board before grasping that Light in her fist and transforming it into resounding balls of Her fierce judgment and throwing this new thunder into the Phalanxes attacking her newly returned allies, missing one group but giving the other mass of bladelings pause.

Then, seeing movement out of the corner of her eye, she throws the final ball of thunder at a Javelineer seeking to hide from her sight, killing it instantly.

As his mortal enemy sullies the minds of his comrades with a psychic assault disguised as honeyed words, IBHEA launches a psychic assault of his own in the form of his patron's curse: "May the black flames of Delban sear your soul from this realm!"

The whisky priest advances to stand between his fellow chosen of Omthala, then conjures a sprawling sphere of shadowy tentacles that grasp the Tiefling and his Bladeling myrmidons in their writhing grasp. Not willing to relent, he raises the symbol of Omthala from his neck as his enemies contend with Delban's wrath. His enemies are dazzled and seared by the Goddess's holy light.

Perhaps it is his earlier existence as the pawn of an uncaring and master that has made the Hound used to being moved without touch, but HAZARD seems unfazed by the priestess's actions on his behalf. On the contrary, he immediately senses the strategic position into which he has been moved: his ally at his back bolstering him; his ally's consort opposite him, helping to distract their foe.

The Hound continues his savage assault on the strange warriors besetting and swarming around them, all the while waiting for his chance to join his True North, his Beloved, in Her fight.

The Merchant Prince staggers under the many blows of tridents and javelins, buffeted and lanced like a recalcitrant toad on the chirurgeon's teaching table. He eyes the battlefield as his allies are swarmed by the warriors of this duplicitous agent of the crown. "This will not do," CHANVATI thinks. "This will not do at all. Gather yourself, man, and respond in kind!"

And so he raises his crystal staff and scrambles spacetime in the scrum to his south. Nearly a dozen Bladeling myrmidons succumb to his strange rearrangement of their forms. And Bita-Bahlin--what to make of the fellow and his layered allegiances and doublecrosses? Besides death--is shunted, still crawling, on the dusty track, away.

Not relenting, the psion imbues another attack with the full energy reserves of his staff, and fells two javelineers where they crouch defensively on the theater. Then he touches two fingers to his pate, billowing psionic energy that shrouds his form from the senses of his enemies.

ARUNNY watches with great fascination as Chanvati causes the molecules of their enemies to dissolve and resolve. When one of the Phalanxes fails to reappear as whole bodies, the lingering dust of their former existence becomes a symphony of sound and color, floating upward in the Moonlight.

The seer suddenly understands what to do with the surge of music and directs the shards of former life at their former allies. The tiefling prince is battered about his face, but the Phalanx of wounded Bladelings fares much worse, scores of savage cuts appearing in jarring tones all over the remaining soldiers.

As Omthala's Voice inhales, she hears the Maiden's protective energy fall about her shoulders as a prayer shawl. Looking at her traveling companions, she sees a silver glimmer about both of their shoulders as their faces seem to relax just a little.

The Tiefling advances upon QAMRA, and his promises seem so sincere! This is not her fight. Just as Omthala blessed her, so too can the Duke of Hell, if only she listen to his call. There is no need for further bloodshed. No abandonment of her youth. She can give up the sword. Swing from a plank bench suspended by thick ropes from an apple tree. Long grasses tickling her toes as she arcs upward into a red sky. But no! Those are not grasses at all but serpents, striking at her feet!

She shakes her head, clearing these visions of subversion, and enters the fray once more.

BITA-BOUSSEH recognizes that the members of the Iron Gorgon Tribe are their secret weapon in this battle, itching for combat, and so she draws them into the fray, first by moving amidst their numbers, then by issuing a challenge.

"You, javelin-thrower: should you defeat these half-giants in martial play, the Lords of the Hells will shower you with riches beyond your imagination!" The Bladeling artilleryman is happy to oblige, advancing towards the Goliath horde with no awareness of the inevitable outcome.

As the myrmidons lunge at her retreat, she shoots a fearsome glare in their direction, but their attention is too much with the clash of arms before them, and so they escape her Hellish gaze.

PA'AVU's eyes focus narrowly on the visage of the brother of the consort of her Gos'btar. She grimly recalls the sounds of hounds howling in fear and pain as they were burned in Ruffly Gelded. She will be happy to send this being to his punishment, a punishment hopefully dealt by those very same hounds in the world beyond this one. Squaring her shoulders, the goliath readies herself for battle, breathing in to activate the protective power of her l'pahb'kin.

Then, with a howl of searing vengeance, she charges the space between them, Velmech'ti held aloft. Diving into her l'pahb'kin once again, she continues to strike him, ending her attack with a final triumphant yell, as the Phalanx of bladelings fails to protect him and falls in their death throes.

"You think your consecrations contain me? You think my allies laid low lends you the upper hand? I am imbued by the primordial might of Vezzuvu, my resources ever-filled by the infinite coffers of Minuaros. Neither Omthala, nor The Moon Maiden, nor Delban can quench my purging fire!"

A wave of burning heat blackens flesh and ignites clothing, parchment, thatch, and grass.

Only Stoneroot or the ancient, blessed blood of a goliath protects against the conflagration that ensues.

The seer quickly moves as her Conductor directs her to stand next to Pa'avu and thus be able to bestow the Maiden's blessing upon Velmech'ti, as she has heard the goliath refer to her great weapon. Of course the Maiden would bless the weapon of the Stoneblessed warrior, for are they not both of the Moon?

Then, Omthala's Searing Voice sings out a radiant tone into the Crucible in her hand, sending out sending tendrils of Their tri-fold radiance at her targets ... and finding her aim is true.

Then, with slow and deliberate purpose, his form still flickering with Hellfire, he stalks across the rutted, broken road, a crackling black sphere gathering in his outstretched hand. When he is but a pace from Bita-Bahlin, he thrusts his flaming appendage through the Hellfire that protects the Tiefling, grabs the courtier where he kneels in the sand, and bellows, "May the black flames of Delban burn your soul from this realm!"

"Tricky, mister," she enunciates sweetly.

Then, despite the Hellfire flickering across her lithe form, she vaults into action, leaping across ancient ruts in the road with balletic grace. When she reaches Bita-Bahlin, she holds aloft her shining sword and emanates radiance from it in a blast around her, catching the Tiefling full on in its glow beneath the starry sky. The agent of Vezzuvu ... or Mammon ... or, ultimately, himself knows that should he not face her in immediate response, she will scour him again with Omthala's painful remonstrance.

Perhaps through The Goddess's direct intervention, the flames suffusing her form are snuffed.

The massive forms of the Iron Gorgon Tribe Goliaths loom and shift about BITA-BOUSSEH, obscuring her vision of the far side of the battlefield and her duplicitous brother. And so she takes out her vengeance upon the Bladeling javelineers.

"Approach, warrior, and Hell will reward you for your bravery," she lures the Bladeling to the north, drawing him within arm's length of her new companions-in-arms with her enticing spell, soon to be pummeled to the ground in a paste by the powerful blows of the Half-Giants.

Then she turns to the south, all pretense of subtlety dropped as she glowers menacingly with all the promise of Hell's fury. The javelineer's heartbeat stops and does not resume after this assault.

Incomprehensible Infernal promises snake from BITA-BAHLIN's filthy mouth. The psychic attacks assail the whiskey priest, the hulking goliath, and The Blessed. From beyond, Mammon reaches deep into the breast and minds of the former two, forcing them to summon their faith and mettle just to withstand the dark words.

But Qamra reaches for the symbol upon her chest, whispers quiet words to beseech her goddess for blessings...and those blessings come in the form of a radiant bulwark foiling Bita-Bahlin's foul tongue.

Feeling the cold...yet somehow also warm...stone of the consecrated church at his hip and upon his back, Bita-Bahlin focuses and screams at Qamra and her allies.

"FIRE TAKE YOU." He erupts. Omthala, Delban, and The Moon Maiden be praised, blessed shields of faith take the worst of it for Arunny and Ibhea, though the infernal blaze still threatens them.

When the wave of conflagration dissipates, Qamra is still there, holy nimbus shrouding her in full.

Untouched by both Mammon and Vezzuvu.

Try as he might to hide it, the look on Bita-Bahlin's face betrays his fear.

As ARUNNY experiences Bita-Bahlin's attacks on her comrades and herself, her psyche suddenly enters a strange netherworld filled with translucent bubbles of moments and possibilities, all possibilities. Her Goddess gently picks one such bubble up to examine its contents more closely... then sets it aside. The seer can see within the stunned faces of priest and goliath, while young Qamra holds her holy symbol, murmuring prayers.

Omthala's fingers replace this bubble with another. Within its transparent shell, Arunny can see an almost identical scene, except now Ibhea mirrors Qamra's actions, holy symbol in hand.

Instantly, Arunny is back in the agora, skin burning from the attack. But her ally Ibhea is no longer frozen in place, thank Omthala!

But years of warding himself from the probing intelligence of Great Powers allows the Tiefling to throw off Ibhea's attempt at control.

In the visual shift as ARUNNY returns to the scene, the seer smells a lavender beam of Moonlight, beginning in cloud of night and ending in another cloud of the First Storm, lingering just above the stone wall. Omthala's Searing Voice smiles grimly.

Holding up Omthala's Crucible, she breathes in deeply before singing a clear, strong tone into the holy symbol. The sound of her voice reflects off the metal and sears into the cloud, exploding it into thunderous wind, buffeting their enemies hiding behind the wall.

Exhausted by this effort, Arunny lays a hand on Hazard before stumbling back a step, as she tries to regain her equilibrium, to no avail.

He doesn't even seem to notice that his cloak is still wreathed in flames.

Then Qamra steps back, sword at the ready, prepared to strike should the tiefling attempt to attack her allies.
