Also, here's an intriguing nugget from the KS page...

I was already in the process of writing a Fae-adjacent OSR rules set to really lean into Dolmenwood and other Fae-adjacent stuffs, so I've put that on the backburner in favour of running DW out of the box. That said, I'm going to take a lot of the setting and scenario ideas I've had and weave them into a DW supplement of some kind. I've also offered the players in the PbP I'm going to run as soon as I have the PDFs the opportunity for their PCs to appear in that same supplement in some fashion. Exciting times. I love this hobby.

b/x is popular because it's an easy lingua franca for dnd-style games. For most OSR systems all you need is the HD of the monster and everything else can be derived at the table. Games like Knave and Black Hack are explicit about how to do this, for example. That said, some systems require more conversion, Cairn for example (though, I wouldn't be surprised if Cairn adds conversions for all the DW monsters to its website for free).

I think you're right, the setting is mostly a hexcrawl. I'm sure adventures written for it will be full of dungeons that can be explored, but I don't know if Dolmenwood has any specific dungeon-crawling mechanics like Shadowdark. I saw a post in the Shadowdark Facebook group this morning from somebody that is super excited to use Dolmenwood as the setting for their Shadowdark game, so you wouldn't be alone if you tried.

I'm floored that this project is already at 3/4 of a million on day two, but Gavin does excellent work and deserves to be rewarded. September 2024 is too far away!

This update notes more dungeon exploration rules:
  • Expanded options for dungeon exploration, including rules for travelling along safe paths, sleeping in the dungeon, food in dungeons, and exiting the dungeon.
