Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

But it's a bird made of fire - does it really need any type of armor? And how is it holding the solid metal mask on its fiery head? And wouldn't the mask eventually just melt off from the phoenix's incredible burning heat?
The mask looks like it's been discoloured by the heat. Nice!

I’m working on this giant from Dungeons & Lasers. It’s technically fine. At only $35 it’s a good value, but my biggest criticism is that nothing about this mini screams giant except the small owl on her left hand. It just looks like a bigger version of a regular sized mini.

So I’ve run into a problem. My original plan for this giant was to make her a nice goth giant with tattoos. Pale skin was the original plan, but now she looks like a California girl who drinks kale smoothies and does Pilates. I didn’t do the face because I planned on goth makeup.

What to do? Goth California girl I guess.

I’ve got something else nice to say about this model. The hair is easy to paint. It’s just really easy for a novice painter to practice painting hair because separate strands are so well defined. Hair is tough, but I’m actually pretty happy with this.

I have that model. The good news is that it was free as a KS stretch goal (D&L has very good stretch goal rewards - the same campaign also had a fantastic tarrasque as a SG reward!). The bad is that I was pretty happy with my paint job until I saw yours. That looks fantastic and you'rre not even done!

Also, I think the base is too small - it's a huge miniature on a large base. D&L initially did the same with the sea giant in the current campaign, but changed it after some of us pointed out the mismatch. I agree that there's nothing that screams "giant" about her, except the size of the model. Cloud giants are generally not that unusual looking, but it would be nice if there was something - I think Wizkids does a pretty good job of making theirs distinct.

I decided to take my time and work on some areas, skin and hair, I need to improve on.

I’m not looking forward to painting all the leather straps on the legs. It’s going to be the most tedious part of the mini. I agree with you about the base being too small. It’s also a bit boring.
