D&D (2024) Wizards of the Coast promises to release more “CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3” without Larian

that would be even more meaningless, and an odd choice of words. I do assume it does mean something along the lines of ‘mature’ / ‘not light hearted’ rather than your ‘lots of sales’ interpretation
They mean "critically acclaimed", "game of the year contender", "cost serious money to make", that sort of thing.

It's easy and cheep to make a game devoid of jokes, it's hardly something to aspire to or boast about.

I'm not holding my breath.

What made BG3 so compelling to me was how different it was from the typical D&D output.

At the time, I wasn't interested in the Forgotten Realms at all, in fact, I had vowed to stop playing D&D entirely.

But the game's emphasis on darker themes, more mature character and relationship-driven storytelling as well as an amazing mix of fantastic character design, voice acting and incredible score... all that won me over.

It was the perfect "goldilocks zone" of gaming to me. Lightning in a bottle.

Unless Larian themselves (or maybe CD Project Red or Owlcat games) takes on D&D games, I will be hugely skeptical and wary.

A perfectly reasonable attitude, making good quality games seem to be hard given the amount of failures. However, we will not get a good game unless they try and keep trying until they find a team that works. Though I would prefer if the put more money into less ambitious games to create the right studio first. Probably could not sell that to investors.

I vote planescape torment 2.

Heck, just keep the story and upgrade the graphics on the original.

Heh, I am skeptical. Baldurs Gate 3 alluded to "not safe for work" content. I would be surprised if WotC would "go there" without making it anodyne.
incredibly, things don't need to contain NSFW aspects to be 'serious', honestly did putting in the infamous bear scene and whatever else similar NSFW content that is in the game really add any notable amount of value overall?

All of that stuff was consistent with the overall tone of BG3. So, in short, yes it did.

Does every D&D game need an M rating? probably not.
