THE HEROES OF DYVERS CHAPTER 7: CLARE'S ERRAND

Dewydd furrows his brow. "Let's see if we can determine if any other effects are on him and whether we need Break Enchantment, Remove Curse, or Dispel Magic," he states as he casts and focuses on Detect Magic.

When Dewydd touches the orb, a booming, laughing, feminine voice (not like Clare's; more harsh, gravelly, elderly) suddenly echoes through the corridor! "Welcome, fools! The labyrinth beyond these doors shall test your skills and resolve, but this orb shall test your might and your mettle! I have captured and mentally enslaved mighty warriors from all over the world to act as my guardians! And you have now released one of the greatest in my menagerie! Say hello to the world-renowned Kensei, Djyn Fujimoto! KILL THEM, MY MINION!! AND FEED ME THEIR SOULS!!"

You see standing before you an impossibly tall elf, probably more than 8 feet in height, with the fine, supple, lithe features of a Gray Elf, but (oddly) with bleached white skin and hair; he is wearing a dark gray kimono, a wickerwork Jingasa (like the kind worn in ancient times) on his head, and gripping two extremely large swords in his hands, which resemble a Katana and Wakasashi, albeit they are much larger. The elf arches his back, puffing his chest forward, stretches out his arms, his swords pointing away from himself, and lets loose with a loud yawn, as he then sheathes the blades into his belt scabbards, almost as an afterthought.

The elf looks calmly around himself, wearing a confused look on his face. It's as if he has no idea where he is. He looks at the party, noting the myriad of professions represented. He makes no move back towards his sheathed weapons. He simply stands there, as if waiting for one of the party members to say something. After a long pause, in which silence reigns, he finally says:

"...Ghfids? Denut ghserf unbok kon guatesh?"

EVERYONE: What do you do?

OOC: If anyone speaks Suloise, or Southern Common (Japanese) let me know. Also, if anyone has magic items which have a constant function of Comprehend Languages, let me know that as well.

OOC: The gloating voice is a Magic Mouth spell, which always relays its programmed speech in a language that the hearer can understand. That's why the party can understand the gloating, booming voice, but not the elf standing before them.

Leonard cocks his head and scrunches his face. "Huh?" He asks quizzically. "This isn't modern Nipponese, but a more ancient dialect. I'm only picking up every fifth or tenth word." He holds his hands up slowly to the towering elf and puts on a calm demeanor. "I'm not the diplomat, so Travis - copy me and try to convey that you're nice and trustworthy with your body language."

OOC: Leonard: Knowledge (History) check of 17.

Travis copies Leonard's stance by raising his hands slightly and bowing his head respectfully. A small smile plays across his face and he slowly turns his hands palms up.

OOC: Travis: Diplomacy check of 30.

As Travis does so, Leonard begins using Nipponese words to try and convey non-hostility, hoping the lofty elf will understand at least one and not get the wrong meaning. "Yūjin. Friends. Yūkō-teki. Amicable. Heiwa. Peace. Hi bōryoku. Nonviolent. Yasashī. Gentle. Odayaka. Calm. Odayaka. Placid. Shakō-teki. Sociable. Zenryō. Good. Kokoro no komotta. Cordial. Chōwa. Harmony."

If Nipponese is just modern Japanese, the literal translation is "Friends. Amicable. Peace. Nonviolent. Gentle. Calm. Placid. Sociable. Good. Cordial. Harmony."

While their odd sense of humor makes most people see them as the comic relief, Lenny & Travis are actually quite skilled and talented.

Once the message has been conveyed, Leonard says to the party: "The Nippon Dominion started out as a province of the Suel Empire. It was called The Royal Suel Province of Nippo Sujang. The citizens of that province spoke an ancient form of Nipponese called Jomon. When they were absorbed into the Suel Empire, their language evolved into a mixture of Jomon and Suloise. Since the province was on the southwestern side of the empire, the language became known as "Western Suloise."

OOC: DM NOTE: For Expediency: Suloise in the modern era (CY 964) is a dead language, known only to scholars and sages. Modern Oeridians think of Suloise the way we in the real world think of Latin. There is a modern tongue, also known as Suloise, that is spoken in the Scarlet Brotherhood, but it is not a completely pure dialect, i.e., it is not "true" Suloise. Modern Suloise is to true Suloise what Acadian French is to French French. Consequently, ancient Jomon is to modern Nipponese what Old English is to modern English. Thus, Western Suloise is a combination of TWO dead languages!

Leonard continues, "The Invoked Devastation of the Rain of Colorless Fire (hereafter referred to as simply "the invoked devastation") occurred on S.D. (Suloise Date) 5094. Both the Baklunish and Suloise empires were utterly laid waste, and cast into ruin. Neither empire ever recovered, although many people on both sides of the conflict survived, and spread their heritage far and wide into many other later cultures. Afterwards, the province of Nippo Sujang evolved into an independent nation-state that still exists today: The Nippon Dominion. On the Suel calendar, CY 964 translates to S.D. 6,479. If this guy is speaking Western Suloise, which I believe he is, then he has been out of the loop since BEFORE the invoked devastation!"

OOC: I am going to wait for a few more responses before we move on to allowing Djyn to speak for himself.

Val The Talking Axe also wants to put in his two cents worth: "All you flower-eatin' spellcasters flaunt your high wizardry skills, casting fireballs and lightning bolts, but none of you have ever prepared for the contingency of needing a simple Comprehend Languages spell? Pffttt... and you call yourselves adventurers!"

Lathir conveys his assessment to the party members, adding, "I do know if it important, but it appears that this trapped being is an elf."
OOC: When I posted this several more posts appeared before it which were not there before. Now it is out of place. I have a lot of trouble with this site using my iPad
