Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

I'm following thread about this same topic on another forum (general one). In 60-ish post so far, 0 mentions of Rawling, her politics or politics in general, just pure HP based discussion and occasional shitting on studios for milking bellowed franchise. Here, on forum with geeks and fantasy/sf lowers, there are more discussions about Rawling herself than actual tv show. :(

Dumbledore constantly bends the rules for his special kid, so basically, Harry just knows the right people and is considered to be a chosen one (which is a trope I don't particularly like, as well).
Not to diminish your criticisms, but sometimes "chosen one" prophecies are self-fulfilling just by how others react to the prophecy and treat the chosen one. See also Oedipus Rex.

And this is actually touched on in the books revealing that the chosen one could have been Neville instead, had Voldemort chosen differently.

You're probably right that the treatment of the chosen theme are not that one-dimensional ... and I will also admit that, if you go at it in another way, there is a lot to love about the series, thematically and in execution. It just happens that it pushes a lot of my negative buttons.

@Swanosaurus

Out of curiosity, how old were you when you first read books?
It was around the time the third book was published, probably 2000, so I would have been 22.
Back then, I was an avid fantasy reader, and I admittedly was also annoyed by all the people telling me about all the amazing ideas and the wild imagination on display in these books, and I read them and, at least in terms of fantasy, found only well-worn tropes.

The trailer looks fine, but I can't see this series working.

IMO, the biggest weakness of the first two films is that they're too close to the source material, which means they're overly long for what they're presenting. Spreading that out into a season of TV doesn't feel like it's going to help.

What would benefit from more time is the last four books, but those will suffer from the core cast all being too old for their roles by the time they get to them. They'd need to do a season a year, which isn't going to happen.

(In theory, I suppose they could film the seasons one per year, and then take their time with post-production. That should solve the aging problem. But I can't see them doing that.)

Thank you for answering. I figured you probably read it as an adult, just didn't want to presume it. I was 10-11 when first book came out and about 19-20 when last one came out, so i read it "in real time", being close to age of Harry. Lot of what you wrote about in your previous post, you don't perceive when you read it or watch it as a kid or teen. HP was for much of my generation (and those 2-3 years older/younger) one of the first books in fantasy genre. I read Hobbit and Narnia then HP 1. When you read it as adult, with decent amount of sf/fantasy classics under the belt, it falls short.

I think it’s going to be really good. HBO for some reason does fantasy better than anyone else.

I think I became more excited because of the haters. It looks 100x better than the one ring or the new trek
Who gives 2 bleeps on how much money Rowling makes. Not 1 cares that Disney has wasted billions on new Star Wars that can’t hold a candle to this story and I’m not even a big fan of potter stuff.
There’s always this talk about tolerance on 1 side and yet time again and again tolerance is gone on both sides. I guaranteed that most death threats against say the author and most of the cast aren’t coming from what is perceived as the bad side . As it’s said in the movie scream the call is coming from inside the houses

Ah yes, people who believe in the right of expression and gender identity are famously intolerant.

Agree. Kids love the chosen one story, they love the house system and sorting themselves into it, they love the quidditch.
