Mordenkainen's Sword. Am I reading this right?

For me, it helps to think of the "Sustain:" line as similar to paying upkeep in MtG. In order to keep the effect going, you have to pay X, where "X" in this case is a minor action.

    References to Barbarian playtest vanished?

I could have sworn that I saw that the Barbarian class from Player's Handbook 2 was going to be previewed in this month's Dragon, but it's not there anymore. Am I imagining things, or did they pull references to a Barbarian playtest? ETA: I'm not crazy, at least one other site saw the same...

Compiled info on upcoming classes & races

The Living Forgotten Realms RPGA preview specifically says that the swordmage, drow, and genasi excerpts come from the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide, not the PHB2. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/news/lfrcharacters

How do we make economics that do not limit character concepts?

I'm sorry, but the more I read this over, the more problems I'm having with it. With such an obviously subjective assertion right at the top, I almost don't want to continue. Wizards of the Coast did not "fail" to create fun economics, because WotC did not intend to provide fun economics; at...

How do we make economics that do not limit character concepts?

Back to the topic: Much of what you say is correct, if you play a game that is set within the intended design of 4th Edition: one of heroic adventurers fighting cool cinematic battles or overcoming cunning skill challenges. Stepping too far outside of that is going to require some effort on the...

Dragon Magazine #365's Character Concepts: Masterful optimization advice by WotC

The typo thing is annoying, but it's hardly limited to WotC (or RPGs, or gaming). I've just learned to grit my teeth and ignore it. I'm more concerned with significant revisions to the rules being released as "errata", such as the overall lowering of various skill and effect DCs and the revamp...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on using 4E disease rules to simulate injuries

http://gloomforge.livejournal.com/11215.html?thread=187087#t187087 The example given is off-the-cuff and the numbers may be off, but Keith talks about using the disease rules to simulate the effects of a broken arm, for some NPCs in an adventure. ----- Broken Arm Level 12 disease Special...

New Eberron article, "Dolurrh's Dawn", with new epic destiny

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drdisp/20080728 The new epic destiny is Reborn Champion; you are the reincarnation or return of a legendary hero (think King Arthur's prophecied return, Gandalf the Grey returning as Gandalf the White, or Aang in <i>Avatar: the Last Airbender</i>) whom...

New errata for core books, dated 7/2/2008

I think that calls for a D&D Insider article explaining the changes to the skill challenge systems and how the new system is supposed to work, similar to their Rules of the Game articles for 3.5 or the article about the 3.5 polymorph changes.

    Why are skill challenges "broken"?

Yes, and the errata officially removes the notorious footnote from page 42; in other words, you don't add +5 to the DC for skill checks any more.

New errata for core books, dated 7/2/2008

Wow, it looks like DCs and skill uses across the board came down. And the dreaded footnote on page 42 is now gone! Chunks of the skill challenge chapter have been rewritten; the biggest thing I saw is that skill challenges allow for three failures regardless of the number of successes needed...

    Legal use of Windows fonts?

I am not a lawyer, but I do work in the technical side of the publishing industry. Fonts are complex pieces of software in their own right; while a lot of people think of them as "just fonts" and free for the taking, lemme tell ya that any decent publisher most certainly does not. If you are...

Mimicking WotC's layout design, fonts, etc. . .

The first one is definitely his; I work with fonts all day long and, while I'm not a complete font guru, I could spot the differences right off. (It also helps that I'd already located the correct fonts and have been tinkering with my own project, and have been staring at then for several...

Combat cards for Shadowfell Keep bad guys

The only problem I noticed is that "Implement" was misspelled as "Impliment" on several of the magic item cards. At the same time, I love that item card layout. I might tweak it a little to see if I can make better use of the space, but the PDF item cards are great.
