    The oft forgotten familiar

I once had a player who had a character only 1 level of wizard, the rest of his levels were in barbarian and fighter, who had a hawk familiar. It had a lot of hit points and a really high BAB, wasn't terribly useful, he mostly kept it around for show but by the time he was in high level his...

    Speeding up combat

Wish there was some way to get people to do that, but those things are usually what slow down combat.

    Possibly a stupid question, but. . .

I make some custom stuff. For this reason I tend not to buy too many supplement books since usually only 10% of the stuff in a given book will get used but 95% of the stuff I make up will get used. To a certain extent though you can't just create something wholecloth, for a spell for instance...

Star Wars SE Skills in D&D

I think skill points are one of the easiest parts of D&D. Particuarly for a PC leveling up level by level. Even when making a high level NPC I'll just pick out a handful of skills to max, a few to put at 1/2 max and then reduce those skills as needed to put other skills in the 2-5 rank range...

House rules designed to facilitate competence (and therefore fun) at lower levels

And as always you could just start the PCs at level 2 or 3 if you want them to be more 'competent'.

Not Everyone is Interested in Powergaming [merged]

Powergaming can only bad if taken to an extreme. Choosing to take cleave over toughness for your fighter is an optimal choice (between the two). Which is completely different from taking 4 different PRCs. There' s middle ground, not just the poles powergame and RP. I've often seen players...

    Why do elves suck?

I use to really like elves, then I tired of them. For both RP and mechanical reasons, they're boring in both and actually weak mechanically (-2 con). These days my races of choice are halfling, human and dwarf. Mechanically interesting (albeit a little strong with the dwarf, and human is what...

What constitutes your "comfortable" level in a campaign?

Amen! DMs who allow entire books I'm usually hesitant about, fortunately my group tends to defer to the DM before taking any character advancement options. This is typically what I do when I DM, I also have a list of feats I've approved from previous games and PRCs I'll be allowing in that...

Shooting arrows through a Wall of Fire

This came up for our group once, we came to the same conclusion, wall of fire destroys arrows.

Drop Trap Sense from the Barbarian in exchange for...?

Trapsense is generally a pretty weak ability IME. I guess it depends on how trap happy your DM is and weather or not your party is any good at finding them. That said it should be replaced with a weak ability because trapsense is a weak ability.

    Druid Archetype

Being able to wild shape and cast spells via natural spell is why people consider druids to be better even than clerics. nittanybone lays out their advantages pretty well, so I won't keep going on about it. What classes do you and your friends think are more powerful? Or do you think the...

    Pixies

I allowed a pixie character one. It worked out alright, DR cold iron, flight and invisibility made him very tough but he died after getting blasted to hell by a caster, ironically every other PC in the party lived. Didn't give him any of the arrows though, if he had asked or gone out of his...

Turnabout Is Fair Play - Female Gamers

Every female gamer I've met got into RPGs independent of any male companion. Most girlfriends I see dragged to the gaming table either leave from boredom or because the GM after the game politely asks the boyfriend not to drag people to the game who don't want to be there to play the game.

    Healers that aren't clerics

Well from the SRD's wizard entry: "A wizard casts arcane spells which are drawn from the sorcerer/ wizard spell list." Also I'm pretty sure everyone involved in writing of the rules and nearly everyone who plays the game would not agree with your assesment of wizards learning spells from any...

Dragon Shaman without auras, what should it get?

Might as well work from the ground up. You'd want to get rid of their healing abilities too if you want to make them more dragon like, so loosing that and auras is about 1/2 the class. Probably give them full BAB. Spell-like abilities that more closely mirror what their true dragon gets...

    Level Adjustment for Higher Stats

I don't think a reroll and +2 to two skills is worth +1 LA. Neither do I think the other option is worth +2 LA.

How constrained do you feel by D&D "canon"

I don't feel constained by it, however I do keep it in mind, but I know when I've moved far enough away from it that I'm no longer playing D&D. With how far some people move away from canon I sometimes feel relief when a player will choose to play a traditional archtype (which can be more...

    Heroic stats

Sounds like it could be pretty cool. Only problem I see might be casters having ridiculous save DCs at higher levels. In the core rules about the highest you can get your casting stat is 36 (18+2 Race+5 Level+6 Enhancement+5 Inherit). So about the max DC they could get is 34 (9 spell level+13...

How often should a Ftr 7 hit a CR 7 opponent?

Lets see, BAB +7, +3 Stregnth, +2 Weapon, +1 Weapon Focus = +13. It wouldn't be hard to get higher with a better strength/dexterity or equipment and spells. Your players are fine, and the system in this regard is fine.

Minority Opinion: Why is the loss of the magazines just fine?

No one in I've gamed with has subscribed to them in years. Even when some guys I gamed with did subscribe to one/both of them we rarely used material from them.
