Informal DM Survey: Stat Generation Method?

    1) I use a point-buy system. In the current campaign I am using 35 points, which I feel is rather high but my players prefer. (This is an outgrowth of using the PHB Character Generator for our first campaign; the point buy equivalent of most characters there was 45 (!). I've cut 5 points off...

    Understanding Aerial Combat

I'll have to take a look at the Dragonlance books or see if I can find that Dragon issue, but I was hoping that the Core Rules would be sufficient. Since Fly is 3rd level and all, you'd think it would come up in a lot of campaigns. ;-) Thanee says: I like this; I like things to be easy...

Metamagic Rods - Wiz vs Sor

Falling Icicle says: I wouldn't go that far! ;-) IMC the Sorcerer has looked a little easier to play, and he's clearly better at the artillery role than the Wizard. But, as you point out, he makes up for that by having a very limited spell selection. My contention only was that the types...

Metamagic Rods - Wiz vs Sor

You and Icicle seem to be having a different experience than I am. What level characters are you playing; perhaps this issue disappears at a certain level?? We're playing 12 level; consider this standard Wizard loadout: 1st: MMx2, Mage Armor, Pro Evil. 3rd: Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Dispel...

    Understanding Aerial Combat

I am preparing to run some aerial combats and I am trying to understand the rules for them. Six questions, broken up by topic: 1) As far as I can tell, the subject is only covered in the DMG on p20 (Tactical Aerial Movement)? 2) What is Maximum Turn? Is it the sum of Turn and Turn in Place...

    Out of Shape Miniatures?

That is what I used. Boiling water would work, but it cuts down on the amount of time you have to work with. ;-) My technique: Microwave water in small drinking glass until hot to touch. Drop mini in glass. Use chopsticks to retrieve mini after 1 minute. Should feel "floppy". Pose mini...

D&D 3E/3.5 Why did they nerf the "sleep" spell in 3.5?

Yes, absolutely! (Was my original post really that unclear!?) Anyway, for those people who are claiming 3.5E Sleep is "useless", what mass-kill spell are you taking in its place? To me, Color Spray doesn't have the range and it doesn't totally incapacitate your foe like Sleep does. So I'd...

D&D 3E/3.5 Why did they nerf the "sleep" spell in 3.5?

Losing one guy out of your adventuring group is bad, but losing everyone is certainly worse! The 3E Sleep had the potential to clean out low level party with a lucky roll (and some unlucky saves). More important (IMHO) it was a spell that could turn an exciting fight against standard low-level...

Metamagic Rods - Wiz vs Sor

I agree wholeheartedly with this. To extend on it a little, when the Sorcerer is "on" he tends to be a bit of an artillery piece, throwing multiple high-damage spells over the course of a day's combat. Thus, he has greater synergy with the Metamagic Rod than the Wizard who doesn't function as...

Metamagic Rods - Wiz vs Sor

It's surely for game-balance reasons. If you've ever seen a Sorcerer throw 6 Maximized, Empowered Lightning Bolts in a row you know what I am talking about. The Wizard just doesn't have the same synergy with a Maximize Rod that a Sorcerer does.

    Encounter Distance

I asked the same question a while back in this thread: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=70517

D&D 3E/3.5 Why did they nerf the "sleep" spell in 3.5?

Sleep still seems to be a "Top 3" first level spell; I don't see fewer people taking it, I just see fewer people taking it as a first pick. Which means to me that it's correctly balanced with the other first level spells. OTOH, I have seen a Sorcerer refuse to take Sleep, echoing the logic...

    Which Edition Do You Use?

That's where it used to be in 3E; that was the exact section I looked in. Looking at the SRD now these rules seem to be part of Disarm or Sunder, as others have mentioned. I dont have my 3E PHB here to see whether this is a change to the wording of those actions or not. Anyway, since I am...

    Which Edition Do You Use?

We've moved to 3.5E. It generally cost the players $20 (if they got to the Gamekeeper going-out-of-business sale in time) so cost wasn't a real factor in the decision. OTOH, I wanted to try the re-balanced classes (which I think are clearly better) and the fixes to certain overpowerful spells...

    Next Batch of Miniatures?

With a similar effect on the secondary market I fear. Right now less desirable Archfiends rares are going for 75% of pack-price while the most desirable ones are 200% cost. Does this imply that the Huge figures will sell for $15-$40? I can only hope that having one Rare and one Huge in each...

    Forge of Fury: Deathtrap? (spoilers)

We had a memorable running battle with the Duergar (we agreed to a truce and to retreat after both sides had taken considerable damage; they felt we hadn't kept our end of the bargain when we only retreated back up the stairs into the axe room and barricaded ourselves) which was cool. The Rug...

    Forge of Fury: Deathtrap? (spoilers)

You dont mention the Trog's Stench ability; did everyone save against it? (I suppose this is a 3E->3.5E conversion issue; a 3.0E Trog made PC's lose 1d6 STR if they failed their saves; it looks like a 3.5E Trog "sickens" PC's which gives them a -2 to everything instead. Probably about the...

Contingency: use of "or" allowing multiple conditions?

In my campaign I was cruel and defined any boolean logic condition as "complicated". So trying to tack on extra conditions with "and","or" and "xor" runs a chance of having the spell fail. It might be more sensible to define a certain number such as 3 or 5 conditions as being complicated, but...

    Rays, Cover, Firing into Melee

Do Rays take the same penalties for Firing Into Melee that a mundane ranged weapon does? For instance, can I accidentally Disintegrate my friends with careless ray'ing? If not, do Rays take other mundane penalties, such as versus prone or covered opponents? If so, is there an equivalent...

Todd Lockwood cover art, super piece low opening bid--NEW PIECE ON SALE NOW

Just to round this discussion out, the piece went for a bit over $2000. I was sorely tempted, sorely enough to show my wife the painting and ask what she thought of it. (All married people should understand what this negotiation gambit means.) In any case, I hope the deal worked out well...
