[High level monsters and powers] What can Graz'zt actually do?

Funnily enough this is exactly what one of my players wants to do. We are only just at level 11 so I have a while before it needs to be fleshed out.

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

I am a big fan of RQ, we played RQ3 for years and I am an avid Glorantha collector. I am still not sure I would call RQ's system all that realistic. While it did try to simulate lots of real time speed activity the tendency for you to get your limbs chopped off fairly easily always struck an...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

Absolutely. I have previously run high level D&D one shots where HP's did represent actual capacity to take damage. A giant would smash you through a stone wall and you could get up and shake it off. It doesnt work for all games by a very large margin but it can be useful. I suppose it...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

Intentionally misrepresenting stuff is just so 2008. Please find a new record to break.

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

You are taking the situation to an extreme and assuming the GM will act like a dick. This doesnt really help your argument.

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

While it may be more abstract for my group they are better at emulating the sort of genres we want to play in. The application of healing surges and self healing has let me run a Conan'esque sword and sorcery more easily than I have ever been able to in the past.

Non Conventional Ways to Get your Players into the Mood...

For the last session of our heroic tier game I had the music from the Conan films and Krull playing in the background. In one session the players were on the clock, they had ten minutes to do what they needed to do. Unusually for me I decided to track it round by round. I had a stack of 100...

Yes, intentionally stilted examples certainly do help you to prove your point.

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

If HP are abstract why are we even having the discussion. If they are abstract then both magical and non magical healing can make perfect sense. Personally I see HP as representing ability to keep going. Damage can represent physical injuries, exhaustion, terror, whatever you want it to...

    GMPC surges..

The NPC is designed to stand in for a PC, I would have him work in all ways like a PC would. I would also make the players responsible for running his actions in the game.

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

Spells are not that widget as they stop making sense if you think too hard about them. Consider this example: A 100hp fighter is driven near to death, he is in negative HP. He is healed back to 9hp. He is concious but on a fraction of his total HP. A 10hp fighter is driven near to death...

Killed by your own party member!

While we havent had any fatalaties yet it is not uncommon for our group Wizard to routinely catch the fighter in his various AoE effects. One of the most amusing incidents involved him immobilising the Fighter with Ice Storm while he was stuck in the Clerics Blade Barrier.

Best and worst of 4th Ed. Monsters

I like what they have done with the various different low level humanoids. The worst monster is a competition between the various Hydra and the Purple Worm. Solo monsters with huge bags of HP and little to nothing in the way of interesting abilities are just a bad idea.

    Artwork for your D&D game

I have loads which are neatly ordered into a giant alphabetical list. I skim through it for inspiration sometimes or to use as game props.

6 months later: impressions of 4e

Maybe but these are very easy to turn off with the application of some imagination and basic thought.

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

I agree with this with the exception of the last part. The DM's skill comes from both comfort with the rules, practice and a bit of natural flair. Your best edition might be your first or your last. I loved playing 1e. I loved running 2e. My system of preference is 4e.

No other Ranged Weapon Class, or How I loathe the ranger

You dont lose any time attacking. The point is to avoid being attacked yourself using your mobility while also keeping up the damage. Staying out of melee range when it isnt your turn forces the monsters to try and move, provoking OA's. On your turns you move into melee, make your attacks and...
