How many roles should there be?

If roles were separated from classes, how many are there? It's possible to make a rules engine where different fighters can choose between being built as a controller, defender, leader, or striker depending on their build. It's also possible to make a system where, depending on the tactical...

What would you rather see: core rulebook or traditional trilogy?

When we're playing at the table I prefer to have fewer pages to flip through. The traditional PHB-DMG-MM trilogy minimizes the number of pages I don't need around each rule I'm looking for.

Kits, Paragon Paths, Prestige Classes, and Themes; Oh My!

I've seen a number of comments on Monte's poll that those options are redundant so I formatted to the poll this way to clearly see the "best" mechanic (based on popularity). Me personally? I agree that they're not mutually exclusive per se. I'd like to see one of the options in the core rules...

Kits, Paragon Paths, Prestige Classes, and Themes; Oh My!

In the history of Dungeons & Dragons we have seem a few ways to customize your character class. Generally this was used to express niche concepts with mechanics or to narrowly focus a broad class in specializing on one aspect of that class. Which method was your favorite (whether you want your...

Gamers Who No Longer Have Time to Game

Magic: The Gathering Online was designed for exactly this problem in the TCG player base. Those who had lives and families for whom it was no longer convenient to get games together. It was so successful that Wizards of the Coast discovered they didn't have the capacity built into the software...

    Gunslinger in core?

4th edition already supports gunslinging. Take a wizard, reskin at-will attacks as firearms, and proceed. Take an invoker, reskin at-will attacks as firearms, and proceed. Etc.

    Monte Cook - Pros

    We now have "official" Wizards of the Coast numbers to compare with EN World. EN World % - EN World Count - Rating - WotC Count - WotC % 23.77% - 29 - Five Stars - 529 - 10.3% 33.61% - 41 - Four Stars - 1431 - 27.9% 23.77% - 29 - Three Stars - 1989 - 38.8% 9.84% - 12 - Two Stars - 784 - 15.3%...

Uniting the Editions, Part 3 - Poll

Monte's original poll was really broken so he fixed it. He also split it into two polls and added a few extra options. 1. Of the following choices, select any rules elements or character options you would like to see appear as part of the core rules in the next version of D&D. 2. Of the...

    Measurements for ranges and grids

Yes, 3 feet/1 yard/1 meter is better personal space metric than 5' squares. Reasonable size rooms would have better maneuverability with a few extra grid spaces. Also, give us hexes instead of squares.

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

Desired: Other than damage, one roll per spell. Either to hit roll or saving throw but not both. And some spells (Magic Missile) can have neither a hit roll nor a saving throw. Both vancian classes and similar non-vancian classes. At-will attacks that don't completely suck for vancian...

Uniting the Editions, Part 3 - Poll

A few of the options cover more than one outcome. I voted for Action Points but I was voting for Eberron's "add +1d6 to my attack roll". I was not voting for 4e "make one turn take longer than normal every other fight". Sometimes you just really need to turn a miss into a hit. I voted for...

Uniting the Editions, Part 3 - Poll

Monte Cook's poll from Uniting the Editions, Part 3. Monte talks about "Although we don't currently see universal consensus on this, it seems likely that there are a handful of things from prior editions that we don't want to bring forward into a new iteration of D&D. Not everything about every...

    Legends and Lore for 2/13

I think the polls have been relatively fine up until now. This poll, though, doesn't make any sense. What is the question to which we're responding? I suspect that a technical error caused the poll to show up without the corresponding "question" and it isn't meant to be intentionally opaque.

    Monte Cook - Pros

Monte failed to summarize last week's poll results when he posted Uniting the Editions, Part 3. We're left to wonder if these EN World poll results are at all close to what Wizards of the Coast saw over at Wizards.com.

    Assassin in DDN

As a player of low-magic games, put me down in favor of a no-spell assassin class. With or without poison rules, both are interesting. What about using the 3e Shadowdancer name for the shadow-spellcasting assassin class? What makes a spell-less assassin different from a thief? Oh I don't know...

    D&D 3E/3.5 5e Forgotten Realms - should it be closer to 3e or 4e?

If we've seen the "last" of all encompassing realms setting books then I've seen the last realms book I'll ever buy. I want my setting books to be all encompassing. That is what's worth my money.

    D&D 3E/3.5 5e Forgotten Realms - should it be closer to 3e or 4e?

I'm talking about the merging of the two different versions of Faerun (Abeir / Toril) in order to bring in Dragonborn. The spellplague. Opinions? Should Forgotten Realms be retconned in D&D Next?

Adapting a video game concept to D&DN

While I respect the OP's opinion, I believe that classes are the singular essence of D&D. Classes still leave a lot of room for different designs. Races were once classes. Kits took classes and sometimes turned them into almost completely separate classes. Classes have room for flexibility in...
