I also strongly dislike the whole ECL system. I've toyed with the idea of exp penalties, replacing ECL. I've haven't run the numbers yet, but it would be 10-20% per former ECL. Of course, there are rules in UA for buying off ECL levels. craftyrat

One way to encourage more varied weapon use, or to reward players with non-ideal weapons, is with prestige classes (ie: invisible blade for that dagger wielder, the older lasher, the various bow-using prestige classes). I prefer this to adding another level of complexity. craftyrat

I had this same problem (not necessarily with the same error message), and it was being caused by a failing video card. The logic of "failing video card = spontaneous rebooting" escaped me, so it took awhile to figure this out :p . craftyrat
