What DO you like about 1E AD&D

I like the simplicity of what the player needs to know, especially when compared with other, skill-based games. Here's the entirety of what a player needs on his character sheet: Grunk, Human, 6'2", 180 lbs. 1st level Fighter, Neutral Good STR 13; INT 9; WIS 10; DEX 12; CON 11; CHA 10 HP 6; AC...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

There's a lot more to excitement in a role-playing game than probability. Gambling is abstract. RPGs put you in the middle of a situation as if you were there. This is what made RPGs so successful. There's also more to RPG excitement than suspense. In any case, no one is saying you can't have...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Character sheets aren't rules. And you had the more exciting time for it. After you fought that goblin, you had a better idea of what kind of power your character had, and you never had to look at a table.

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

It's funny you should say that. If you study the tables of contents of the two books, you'll notice that the DMG is written to mirror the PH.

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Players don't need access to the attack or saving throw matrices. The player rolls to hit, and the referee tells him whether he has hit or not. I think the argument that players are not supposed to read the referee's book is correct, but has been overstated (in reaction to the overstated...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

I don't like the fact that seven days' worth of iron rations and standard rations were given encumbrance values of 75 and 200 respectively, instead of 70 and 210 (which are divisible by 7). Naturally, I change those values when playing.

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Umm... I simply asked where the assumption that most groups had multiple referees came from, then sarcastically gave my opinion on the worth of Internet forum polls. I'm not backing "the other side," and I certainly didn't whine. Methinks you are rather defensive about this topic.

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Ah, yes, a truly representative sample. What other things?

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Who are these "most groups" of which you speak? Do you have anything besides your own assumption to back that up? "Most groups" I knew had exactly one referee who ran whatever game was being played.

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

"Poker, chess, and the AD&D system," Dragon #67, November 1982. Actually it was more like he said if you modified the rules that made up the framework of AD&D, you were playing an AD&D variant. Just as you couldn't bring variant rules to a chess tournament, so you couldn't bring variant rules...

    OD&D or RC?

Buy the D&D PDFs, print them out as booklets, then feel free to pencil in any changes. (Why look! The books themselves tell you to pencil in changes!)

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

I must try to remember that nowhere is absurd hyperbole more prominent than on Internet discussion forums.

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

No, but they are saying they don't like it because it "doesn't make sense." Go complain to Gary, then, because that's how he sees it. Now, look at a map of Conan's world, and tell me where the non-human empires are.

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

Class-switching came about because a magic-user character ended up on Mars, where no magic was available. So Gary let him convert the class to a fighter. Then they decided to write a rule for it, and now everybody whines about how it makes no sense. It's just a game, not a simulation...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

The metric system is good for doing arithmetic. The traditional system is good for actually measuring things. 1 mile = 1 "see": the maximum distance you can see man-sized detail 1 league = typical distance you can walk in one hour 0°F = as low as the temperature typically gets in a temperate...

    Og!! Caveman gaming

Og (the original, though I've never read the rules) and Land of Og are parodies are D&D; Robin Laws' new version is a completely new set of rules. Part of the fun of the originals was that you were totally, blunderingly incompetent at everything. Not so much with this new version. The text of...

    Og!! Caveman gaming

I bought a copy of the new version, but I must say I prefer the previous one (Land of Og). Somehow it seems funnier. I've run a couple of games of Land of Og resulting in much amusement.
