    Favorite Character...

This is, fortunately, an easy one. Kazuu, wild elf paladin. Saved from death by the Call when his settlement was destroyed by raiders, he set off with a spear and some leather armor and an elk. While the elk was his mount, I think he might have gotten onto it twice. "Kazuu and elk are friends...

Ever Play In/Run a Campaign Where Everyone Played Characters of same Race & Class?

Yes on both, if "with multiclassing" counts. I've played a thieves' guild game (who hasn't?) - all rogues with a couple multiclass levels, a wizard's academy game (field trip gone horribly awry!) - wizards of various races and specialties, plus a sorceror trying so very hard to learn it "the...

    What is "The Forge?"

I'm with Teflon Billy. Forgespeak = English with the non-Euclidean template. :D

    What is "The Forge?"

Well, I'm only seven pages in on my first reading of this thread, but I'd like to share something. This is more or less my first exposure to The Forge, and while reading I was fascinated by jdrakeh's reference to the Narrativism definition. So I opened another Firefox tab and loaded up The...

    Helmets

An old DM of mine treated helms as optional elements of a suit of armor imposing a penalty to Spot and Listen checks while wearing it; -1 for light, -2 for medium, you see where this is going. However, they provided an equal AC bonus against the confirmation of critical threats. It's extra...

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

Quoted for truth. Having played from the red box on, I can say that 3.x in no way diminished my capacity to make interesting, fleshed-out characters that I really want to play. Instead, it gave me the capacity to make that concept fit into the rules with minimal extra effort. Clerics have...

    Lightly-armored, greatsword-wielding human fighter

To be honest, I'm only 80% sure Shaman's reading the same thread as the rest of us. It's not about full optimization. It's about having a concept, a character design, and having the DM give you a very thorough, rough, and dry :):):)pounding because the DM is putting his campaign idea ahead of...

    Got Hobbits?

To borrow from the squirrel, Hells yes. That association is the primary reason I trimmed gnomes out of my homebrew.

    Lightly-armored, greatsword-wielding human fighter

It seems to me like Cintra's nailed it there; it seems to me like Nac isn't saying "The DM won't let me be the most powerful member of the party by leaps and bounds", but something more akin to "With a lack of DM/player communication, it's entirely possible to make a character whose concept, as...

    Lightly-armored, greatsword-wielding human fighter

Well, all drama aside, I think Kamikaze Midget and Aus_Snow have more or less offered up my point. I DM, and when I have a setting that relies on significant variations from the norm, I ensure my players are aware of it. Well, more accurately, one needs to know my house rules and that the...

Help me come up with some window dressing for a temple of Demogorgon

Take as much or as little of this as you need. I'd say it should feel dark, damp, and unsettling. The air is thick and moist and not so much stinking as tasting like brackish water. Water drips from the ceiling or runs down the walls. Fires won't burn for more than a minute, and magical light...

    Got Hobbits?

I played from the Red Box on. I read the Hobbit while my friends were working through Dr Seuss. I've been involved in D&D for the greater part of my life and fantasy for even longer. Do I have hobbits? No. Nor do I have Gondorian knights, men descended from Numenorean Kings, or a One Ring...

    Anyone else miss monster books?

There's a lot of good ideas that've already been offered in this thread, so I'll keep it brief. Quite simply, I love monster books, ecology entries or not. All three Monster Manuals, FF, both ToH, loads of template collections, all the WotC "about monsters" books...I'll buy monster books for...

    rules or world first?

Primarily I want setting info, since I've got my own rules set that works just fine for me, but KidSocrates and ThirdWizard raise good ideas. Races early, and all the rest of the crunchies scattered throughout the setting info. PrC's in their nation or religion of origin, new spells in the...

    Communal Setting: Cambria

Hmmm. I am in need of a setting to run horror games in, and I'd be certainly interested in throwing in some ideas as they come to me. I don't have a copy of Heroes of Horror, though, since the reviews have pointed me away from it; too much money for the roughly forty pages of mechanics I'd use...

Iron Heroes General Discussion: why do you like or dislike Iron Heroes?

I'm fairly sure arscott meant the genre, but that could just be because there are no capitals. :D Aus, I find myself agreeing with you fairly often on these boards, so I'm curious what other subgenres IH lends itself to in your eyes. When I read it, I see sword & sorcery in my head. I can't...

Iron Heroes General Discussion: why do you like or dislike Iron Heroes?

arscott and monboesen said a lot of what I was thinking. No more magic item dependance, more impressive characters...and yet, sword & sorcery doesn't appeal to me, and the magic system is shaky at best. I like feat chains, I like less shoe-horned classes...but then I play with the UA generic...

    Skill feats, anyone?

Certainly. Besides NPCs (who are typically riddled with those feats), my ranger/rogue took Alertness and Stealthy, the former mostly to make up for his 9 Wisdom. It doesn't come up often, but since the last PC I got to play had them, I thought I'd chime in. Mostly it's Alertness or Stealthy...

    Characters in a word

Committed. (Mostly I DM, and the most important NPCs I play are villains, archmages, rulers of nations; the movers and shakers. These people got where they were by force of arms, sorcery, and ambition. When they set themselves to something, very little gets in their way - except PCs.)

bards in your world, advice sought

As suggested, discuss with your DM why he has no interest in bards being a useful character class, or at least why he has no interest in your bard being useful. Well, if it were my bard, I wouldn't stop short of leaving that group; at the least, I'd advocate a change of DM's.
