LostSoul, I think this is a really cool idea! If you have any more examples of it, I'd be really interested to hear them. Also, perhaps this could be the solution to characters constantly doing the take 20 search check in dungeons.

I think you could get by with just the FRCS. Also Wizards has a lot of Realms fluff stuff for free in the form of 2nd edition pdfs, here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

I think individually none of these would force steampunk-ness, but if you had more than 2-3 of them in the same campaign, or had them very common (e.g. widespread computers) it wouldn't seem like fantasy to me anymore.

I am thinking about starting a campaign that has a feel similar to the Amber book series. I was thinking a lower magic, high heroism system would be useful. Would True20 or Grim Tales work? I have heard about Amber rpgs, are they any good? What kind of system would you recommend to emulate this?
