A character would receive his normal HD, but wouldn't receive his normal BAB increase--though he could choose to spend his increase in that fashion.
Let's look at a couple of ways a 5th level Fighter could spend his advances...
Normal
HD: 5 BAC: 10 Melee BAB: +5 Melee Damage: +0 Ranged...
I haven't tried it yet--in fact, it hasn't been released yet--but the English version of das Schwarze Auge looks promising. Fast Forward Games is going to be publishing it. Speaking of Fast Forward Games, they're also going to be publishing 1492: Conquista del Magico--another game I'm really...
(Tried this earlier--let's see if I can post it before the site goes down again...)
Here's something I use in my Basic D&D campaign that might do the trick...
In place of FEATS, each time a character's BAB would improve, rather than automatically increasing it, instead allow him to choose one...
Are there any guidelines around for converting from 3e to earlier versions?
How do you convert an NPC that is a Barbarian 5 / Ranger 1 / Sorcerer 1 to 1e or Basic?
Is there an accepted ratio for comparing character levels?
How are FEATS handled?
Skills?
I'd like to be able to use some of...
A bit harsh, and--I think--inaccurate. He only said that he's seen a number of 3e fans complain about them--and, from what I've seen, I would tend to agree. However, I don't think either of us would claim that all, or even most, are bothered by them.
As I mentioned above, Geoffrey didn't...
I've got the basic rulebook and the Q Manual--both are "standard" soft covers.
The scenarios--each named after and based on one of the films--came in a thin gamebook sized box though.
There might have been other versions that I haven't seen.
As to "vintage" games...
It seems that every game...
Light "Beer" will never pass these lips!
I don't know about having a favorite beer--there are just too many to choose from.
I just tried a great one from Belgium though...Duvel
Oh, and MerricB, no wonder you got into D&D. ;)
I've expressed this sentiment more than once as well.
Leaving aside topics such as this for the moment, I generally try to add something constructive to the discussion here--but I find that my passing familiarity with 3e is becoming less adequate for such efforts as the system continues to...
:D
There's a huge confusion of terms when it comes to OD&D, OAD&D, D&D, AD&D, BD&D, etc...
I think it's safe to say though that OAD&D refers only to pre-2e AD&D.
Incidentally, while I agree (and have said on numerous occaisions) that this is all highly subjective, even though populatity may...
Good points, but I would add this...
What would Gary have been able to offer had he not been hampered, either legally or otherwise, from building upon the foundation he had layed with D&D?
I should have been more precise, it's not just the name recognition of D&D, it's also all the...
I don't think this is a fair measure--not with the system being separate from the Dungeons & Dragons name.
In fact, if such a thing were possible, it would have be interesting to see how well 3e would have done absent the brand recognition.
Ah well, just a bit of idle speculation...
I think something along the lines of the broad skill groups found in Gary's Lejendary Adventures would have been a more steamlined way to go however. I keep meaning to sit down and adapt it to O(A)D&D.
During the time I spent DMing 3e, I found the stat blocks to be far too unwieldy for my...
Never thought this topic would have these kind of legs--it was gratifying to see later posters echoing at least a few of my sentiments though (we're social creatures afterall).
Anyway...
Ridley's Cohort
Just curious, did I answer your question of page 2? :)
Sounds like you're someone who might feel some sympathy for those of us who still play the older editions :)
(Note: NOT an attempt at flamebaiting/threadjacking--just a friendly comment ;))
Not to throw another wrench into the works, but...
I think it's true that BAB is superior to THACO...generally.
In fact, I used that mechanic in my AD&D gaming for quite a while before 3e even came out--I borrowed the idea from 4e Gamma World (and always wondered why I'd never thought of it...
I do something in my Basic D&D campaign that I think takes the best of both systems...
Weapon Tables
Basically, armour still makes it more difficult to land a telling blow, and when such a blow does land it often does less damage than it would against an unarmoured foe.
I avoid the zero...
Ummm...
I might be missing something obvious, but I think we were discussing the merits of multi-classing in AD&D--not 3e.
In AD&D, a character who had amassed 30,000exp would have enough to be a 5th level Fighter, or a 5th level Magic-user, or a multi-classed 4/4 Ftr/M-U (i.e. 15,000exp in...
