    Half-elf dilettante power

Before the errata, I thought Lay on Hands was the best Dilletante power, if you had a decent Wis score (so, for Fighters, Clerics and Wizards). Or Wizard cantrips for anyone else. Now it's errata'd to be an attack power, though, so I'm less sure of things.

Starting Equipment for Higher Level Characters

That's for a party of five characters. So that list of loot doesn't all go to one guy, it gets spread around. If you look at the bit right before the parcel system, about different party sizes, it's pretty close to the parcel system's results for just one character in the party.

    D&D 4E 4E errata up on wizards.com

Man, I was just about to post a thread about how the single best power for Half-Elf Dilletantes is Lay on Hands. Especially if you're a class with a good Wisdom score. Or alternately, picking one of the wizard cantrips. But now it's restricted to attack powers, so it's no good.

Simple question about chargen for levels 2+

Right here actually. All the rules for creating a PC above 1st level were in that excerpt, including the wealth at higher level matter. (Short form is that the "wealth by level" table is dead, and instead you choose one magic item of your level +1, one of your level, one of your level -1 and...

    Class's Secondary Roles

The DDXP fighter felt a lot more like a controller than a striker, as she could affect big groups of minions effectively. The DDXP paladin conversely felt a bit striker-y, as he was much more focused on a single target and avoiding rather than soaking damage (some of this is due to being a...

Table of ability scores for each PHB race, MM race, and class

Anyone notice any unexpectedly good race/class combos? Like, when a race is really good at a given class, though no flavor text or previous rules made that combination work. Dwarves made really horrible warlocks and sorcerors in 3rd ed, but now Warlocks rely on Con, so dwarves might make...

Table of ability scores for each PHB race, MM race, and class

The dragonborn may be good choices for a lot of classes, but that doesn't mean that they are more powerful than any other race. It means they have breadth of choice. You could conceivably build a dragoborn effective in any given class (except maybe wizard), though they'll likely be matched or...

Table of ability scores for each PHB race, MM race, and class

Just the opposite, really. When I made my portion of the spreadsheet, I wasn't always sure which was a class's primary stat and which were secondary. More importantly, I didn't know the relative value of having bonuses to secondary stats versus primary stats (I expect that debate to last 4e's...

Table of ability scores for each PHB race, MM race, and class

Keep on the Shadowfell cut the Half-Elf's multiclass power for whatever reason. Mearls has said that you should just pick another class's at-will power as an encounter power. (I can't find the Keep on the Shadowfell FAQ where they talked about this, though.)

Table of ability scores for each PHB race, MM race, and class

I fiddled with the Excel file to show which races match up best with which classes. In the file, I list each race and each class and how many of the race's stat bonuses coincide with the class's major stats. (Keeping in mind that here I was only looking at stat boosts: Gnomes look to make...

    A short Question

Since we are back to the 3.0 weapon size rules (apparently, more or less), then the halfling gets the effective increase in accuracy by being forced to use lighter/higher proficiency value weapons. Instead of using a longsword at proficiency +2, they're forced to use a shortsword at proficiency...

D&D 4E If 4e fails you, what then?

Dozens? Try hundreds, at least. Probably thousands. So if 4th ed fails me, I'll just play any other the other games that I've been itching to play for so long.

    Familiars?

If I wanted a wizard with a familiar, I'd just take the Implement abilities the wizard gets (Wand Mastery = +2 to hit with one attack, once per encounter) and say I was using my familiar instead of a wand or crystal ball. Simple, easy, and doesn't require any potentially unbalancing houserules.

    Halfling Languages

I better like the explanation that since Halflings travel among other races so much, their language became the universal trading language. Which is to say that Common is the Halfling tongue.

    Multiclassing tidbit.

If (as in 3.x) you can only take a feat once, then it would be better for these to be three different feats than one feat, so people could get multiple powers if they wanted. Yes, they could put in the text "Special: you can take this feat multiple times, but each time pick one of the other...

    Shift vs Move vs AoO?

Here's the thing: whatever the second creature is trying either automatically provokes OAs or it doesn't If it by default does provoke, the first creature won't have an ability that says "Can make an OA when an opponent does X". Because that would be silly and redundant. It would only have...

With the new multiclass rules, there's no reason for you not to get all your class features at first level.

An Observation on Encounter Powers and Enemies that Get More Dangerous when Bloodied

The angels we saw had abilities where they had higher defenses as long as they were unhurt (IIRC). If you had an enemy that dropped in defense once bloodied you might want to save the big guns until you were more certain that they would hit. Lots of Dailies seem to involve Miss effects, but...

    D&D 4E 4e homebrew familiars

Easier and more balanced familiar houserules: 1) Take the Mage Hand cantrip. This represents any times the familiar fetches items for you or otherwise manipulates the environment around you. and/or 2) familiars replace implements, but have the same effect. A hawk or raven familiar gives...
